My great-grandfather, James Hallam, moved to Saddleworth, W.Yorks as a navvy for reservoir or railway building (he also helped to build the Manchester Ship Canal) He obviously came originally from Lincolnshire as he was known locally as "Jimmy Lincoln." I have found a "James Hallam" from Lincoln, Carrington who was born in 1855 and whose children were Grace (born 1883) James (born 1887) Walter (born 1891) Albert (born 1895) Victor (born 1897, who is my grandfather) and Eliza (born 1900) courtesy of 1901 census. His mother was born Mary Ann Goring in 1861 at Kirton, near Boston, Lincs. Any connections out there? He was actually called James Goodman, but his partner was Mary Ann Hallam (nee Goring) who had been married to Thomas Alfred Hallam in 1884 and had a son, John Thomas, by him. Some of the children of James and Mary Ann were called Goodman and some Hallam.
