I'm wondering where the Pikes from Poole (Dorset) have all gone. There were once a number of Pike families there who were involved in the Newfoundland fishery, but the 1881 census lists only three Pikes resident in Poole: Emily Ann Pike (a domestic servant, born at Morden, aged 15), John William Pike (a boarder and law student, born at Wareham, aged 28), and Warberton T Pike (boarding at the same hotel as John William Pike, and also born at Wareham, aged 19). Incidentally, I reckon this last fellow is the naturalist Warburton Pike who travelled in British Columbia and who later died in 1915 at Bournemouth. Did all of the Poole Pikes eventually settle in Newfoundland, or are there any family branches still in the UK somewhere? - David. |
