Richard Petherbridge I'm trying to find out information on a Sidney Petherbridge, who died in Winchester, near Southampton, in 1934. No one quite knew his age, but some say he was 61 when he died, or 67. Either way, he celebrated his birthdays on 28 March. I do not have details on his birth, and I am coming to the conclusion that his birth may never have been registered. We think he joined the Pioneer Corps in 1914 when the First World War broke out. Other stories about him are that he may have married and lived in Birmingham at about the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and had two daughters. Whether he may have subsequently committed bigamy, well... Also, there is talk that he may have used the surname Herridge at some point. Those eight letters fit into Petherbridge! Further, it is believed he went to France in 1914 and lasted the course there until 1918, and my father is positive that when Sidney Petherbridge died he left behind a special medal awarded to those who had survived the four years on the Western Front. Sidney Petherbridge married an Elizabeth (Liz) Webb in 1921 in Winchester. My father came along in 1923. When Sidney Petherbridge died in 1934, several relatives, including a sister, came down from London for the funeral. One last piece of information is that Sidney Petherbridge probably has a criminal record for such incidents as GBH, and it would never surprise me if he had spent time in jail. And that's about all I know about my paternal grandfather. |
