Trying to find Phillips family connections with Rotherwick, Heckfield, Mattingley, all Hampshire, 18/19c., and Burghfield, Berks. My 2xgt grandfather was Francis Phillips, born abt 1810, prob parents Martha Phillips and William South, Martha possibly born Hants. end of 18c. Francis married Ann Maria Hathaway 1854 when he left the Marines. Was a widower then but no trace of first marriage so far. I'm sure there is a connection with brothers James and Joseph Phillips, born Cornwood, Devon, in 1830s or 40s. They appeared in Burghfield, Berks, from 1870s onwards - some children were baptised in Burghfield, and one was born in Mattingley, Hants, both places where Francis worked as an ag.lab. Both worked as gamekeepers in the late 1800s. |
