Searching for the birth of my g. grandfather Ernest Frederick Watts. I have his death cert. from the FRC 7/8/1925 aged 58 and his marriage cert. 2/11/1890 at Stepney in London. He states that he is 24, marrying an Ada Bryant aged 19 and both living in Denmark Street, St Georges. This is where I now come unstuck. His father is a William Watts, deceased a Tailor by profession(prior to death obviously). I have searched the birth indexes at FRC for the years 1866 and 1867 but my main problem is that I dont even know if he was born in this country. My mum thinks he was from Poland or Switzerland or somewhere like that and that his name was changed on arrival because it wasnt very pronouncable. I have a 1901 census record of Denmark St where I know Ernest had lived at some point and there is an Amelia Watts (widowed) aged 56 from Hanover in Germany who I am assuming is Ernests mum plus a son Phillip aged 22. From another site I have found out that the name Watts originates from the Swedish army name of Nyman/Neiman also Watz/Vatz/Vatts etc. Any help greatly appreciated, even how I would go about finding out where to look for immigrants to this country from back then!? Update 14/1/06 Thanks to GR a relative contacted me re the above and now have my g.grandfather & family back to 1700's. Name was originally Vogt and they came from Germany! Thanks to Les & Linda who contacted me and gave me loads of info.
