Wanda Don't know but my aunties always said the same thing! Just meant they were going somewhere, home usually. They used the word a lot 'where's the doings?' when they couldn't think of the right word. OC |

Goulding/Goulden. See if you can follow my thought processes - my family are called Holden, from Lancashire. Nine times out of ten they are transcribed as HOLDING. That is because the Lancashire accent cannot bear a word to end in -EN. My old Aunties used to talk about their front gardings, their golding wedding rings and so on. Now, another common mistran for Holden is Houlden! Which of course gives us Houlding, too. So, for the name Goulden you have possible likely mistrans of Golden Golding Goulden Goulding Hope that makes sense. Goulden to Goulding isnt very far and not much use as a disguise. OC |

Sorry to correct you but girls could marry, with consent, aged 12, and boys aged 14, up until 1927. OC |

Hi Janice, just got back from doctors.Had bad pains over the weekend and stayed on here for ages just to try and take my mind off it..Saw someone had asked for help on here with no replies so asked could we not at least reply in some way and got worked up over it..Stupid me!! Anyway ecg changed a little so sending me hospital appointment.. ...Yes I am still looking for the elusive lot.Sent for the marraige cert for John Goulden and Mary Ellen Maclean that you found could be a possibility to see if that shows anything.Got that many wrong certs for John,Mary Ellen,Eliza, and all the Williams lot that I could start my own GRO if this carries on.Had quite a good result on the Brierley certs though(out of 4,one wrong and cant believe the wrong one looked the most obvious to be right!) and IGI connections in Rochdale looks hopeful..early days on that though...If you can still help that would be loveley but didnt bother you as you have already done so much...Wanda.xx |

Hi Wanda See we are still searching for the illusive John Goulden and Mary Ellen? You just take care with your Angina and look after yourself. Will have to come back to the drawing board and look again. I have missed you and our searching. We are right with everything once Mary Ellen married Thomas Mitchell but maybe we need to look again at her Parents? Love Janice xxx |

Yes and have printed off so I can look when I want to.Just going through them again...They changed the Manchester area so instead of looking for Chorlton which was so easy it came under Manchester instead which covers a lot of areas now..Wanda.x |

He is not down as deceased.Just John Goulden hawker.Cant find her birth but have everything on her from 1911 when she had her first child.Thought if I could find his death then might be able to find her but what if she was underage to marry. He is not a witness, which I have found with fathers on quite a few certs in the family..nor are members of the family ..Just read on one of the threads that 16 was the age to marry with consent. In 1914 her given age is 21,by the way she is Mary Ellen Goulden marrying Thomas Mitchell.Had no luck previous finding her.Keep having to remember that she had a child in 1911 when looking for her.Just thought that if I can find her dad then may be able to find her ..Wanda.x |

Have you checked the complete index? If he was born in about 1859, then in theory he could still have been alive up to about 1959. It will mean a very long trawl through the complete death index, looking qtr. by qtr and year by year. Kath. x |
