Hello, Hoping someone will be able to help me locate a marriage in Canada 1911c McCALL William b1884c Scotland and DONALDSON Annie b1885 Glasgow Scotland. William immigrated to Canada in 1908 and Annie in 1909. I have found Annie on the Nova Scotia Halifax census 1911. On the 1920 USA Census they are married and living in Detroit, Michigan, with their two daughters Jean aged 9yrs and Margarette aged 7yrs, both born in Canada. I am guessing that they were married in Halifax, Canada. Appreciate any help or suggestions. Helen |

Helen, I might have read it incorrectly, but it looks like Annie Donaldson (on the 1911 census) was born in Nova Scotia. |

Hi Lisa , I didnt read it that way but perhaps I am wrong. I just searched the online 1911 census for Nova Scotia, put in DONALDSON, and every one with that Surname in Nova Scotia came up. There was no search mechanism to put in place of birth. Maybe someone will be able to enlighten us. Bye Helen |

Hi Helen, if you click on 'split view' near the top of the page (where you are viewing Annie's information), you can view the actual image. Hope that makes sense. I believe I've found the McCall border crossing. Be back in a few minutes. |

Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 about William McCall Name: William McCall Arrival Date: Dec 1916 Age: 34 Birth Date: abt 1882 Birth Country: Scotland Gender: Male Race/Nationality: Scotch (Scotish) Port of Arrival: Detroit, Michigan, USA Image shows William travelled with Jane, age 7 For both: nationality Canada, race Scotch, last permanent residence: Canada; city or town: London There is a London, Ontario. I could be wrong, but I believe that's the only London in Canada. There is more information but I cannot send the image at this time. Perhaps someone else will be able to? If not, I'd be happy to type the rest of the information. Off to look for the rest of the family. |

Hi Lisa, Many thanks for that, went on line and had a look at the split image. Learning something every day :-). It may still be her though, as you state on your last posting Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 . For both: nationality Canada, race Scotch, Lisa any more information you could give me would be fantastic as I have been struggling to find Annie for ages. Bye for now Helen |

Since they lived in London for at least a short time, I tried http://homepages*rootsweb*com/~maryc/ontmarr.htm (replace * with .) with no luck. (Marriages in Ontario 1800 - 1924) Most of my ancestors aren't mentioned, so I wasn't expecting much. I'll keep looking for things. |

Lisa, Looking fantastic, Annie had a brother John. Sorry to be a pest but you say Birthplace: Glassce Middlser Birth Country: Scotland Could the birthplace be Glassgow? Could I ask for another favour? Could you possibly lookup her father George DONALDSON , on the USA 1920 census he is living with them, estimated birth year 1845. His actual birth details are born Edinburgh, Scotland 1849c. Many thanks Helen |

Helen, check out John Donaldson, age 21, living in London. (1911 Canadian Census) :) :) Be sure to check out the names above and below, eh? --------------- The original looks like Glasgo (or something similar) |

Lisa, I cannot wait to ring my mother in New Zealand tomorrow, she will be over the moon with all the information you have found for us. It certainly looks like the grandfather George DONALDSON born 1849c in Edinburgh, Scotland must have died in Detroit as I couldnt find a death for him in Scotland. If you ever need any help with Australian ancestors please contact me, and I will help if I can. bye Helen Queensland |

Hi Helen: If you can confirm that my John Ovens was related to 'your' Major John Ovens (the Irish-born Australian explorer), that would be ok. :) (Cannot be done, as I've tried for years to confirm or deny the connection.) Anyway, here's one more thing: From Rootsweb: Name: Norman J Chivas Sex: M Birth: 13 NOV 1914 in Canada (English) Death: 28 OCT 1997 in <Naperville (DU PAGE) Illinois> Burial: ??? Father: Alexander Chivas b: 9 SEP 1888 in Scotland Mother: Margaret ??? b: 7 FEB 1894 in Scotland (I'm guessing Margaret is George Donaldson's daughter.) A man posted this information as well as a little bit more: http://wc*rootsweb*com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi (replace * with .) He actually won't have too much to information to give you, but it does look like you can add a lot to his tree. (He does have a LARGE tree, though.) I found his information by clicking on 'Family Trees' and Advanced Search and typing Alexander Chivas and his date of birth. I tried typing your other names, and didn't have much luck, but it might be worth trying all of them. (Hope this is making sense.) It was a pleasure looking for you, especially since I was born in Ontario. :) I've actually been off work this week due to illness and its just after 2:00 am here, so I have to leave now. You really should see the original records we've found tonight. Perhaps if you post a request on this board, someone may be able to send the images to you? If not, I will type the information when I can. It was fun talking with you. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can do anything else. (PS I don't have a computer right now, so accessibility is a bit difficult - currently using mum's laptop.) |
