I found Mary and Sarah J Fairley in 1881 in Sunderland with their mother Elizabeth and sons Thomas and William but nothing for 1891. So it looks as though they were sisters and that Mary married Robert Palmer then William Cooke. Thanks to you all for your input

Just as a suggestion so you get the right people, work backwards from the birth of the living family member you mention. you could go for their birth cert and then their parents marriage/birth cert and find out the proper maiden name. It's just normal methods but you aren't starting with yourself, starting backwards from a known fact is easier than working forwards from a 'possible'. I know of at least 4 folks on here who omitted their own birth cert till late in their research and found that their father wasn't who they thought he was, having wasted £100's of pounds on certs for the later generations it was a hard lesson but it just goes to show.

There's certainly something wrong somewhere Briefly - In 1901 Census for Sunderland William Cooke born 1869, Waldridge, Durham Mary Cooke 26 James 2 Thomas 8 months Thomas Fairley and William Fairley, Brothers - in - Law I'll look to see if maybe Sarah and Mary were sisters or maybe half sisters

I wonder if Sarah FAIRLEY and Mary were sisters? Mary's maiden name may have been FAIRLEY as shown on the births found above. There is this marriage on freebmd Marriages Jun 1892 BRASS Florence S. Shields 10a 855 Fairley Mary S. Shields 10a 855 Metters Emma S Shields 10a 855 PALMER Robert S. Shields 10a 855 VASEY Joseph Nicholson S. Shields 10a 855 Could Mary have married Robert PALMER, then married again as Mary PALMER? Gwyn

Hi Nancy, I ended up with William married to Sarah Fairley from using the Sunderland City web site. It simply says press the radio button for the name of the spouse and up popped Sarah. Can you please tell me how you found him married to Mary Palmer Thanks Sylvia

Hello, I have just joined this discussion, so maybe this has been covered, but. William Cooke and Sarah Jane Fairleywere both married in Sunderland in 1898, but they were not married to each other. These are the records. COOKE William 1898 PALMER Mary 1898 DAVISON Frederick 1898 FAIRLEY Sarah J 1898

The reason that I think that the births are wrong is that the only member of the family left that can remember anything, said that William Cooke was her grandfather and her grandmother was called Mary. I think that the two birth records mentioned were children born to William Cooke and Sarah Jane Fairley who married in 1898 in Sunderland. I've looked for them all in 1901 and have come up with zilch - again !

Sylvia I don't quite understand how you know that the births are wrong if you don't know the mother's maiden name. If you could explain the reason, we may be able to look elsewhere. Gwyn

Sorry, I have no idea what the mothers maiden name is. I was hoping that the birth record of Beatrice and Maria would show the same mothers maiden name but no luck so far
