Hi Pen, I don't know whether it was me not looking at the right time but I had the impression you had been away - scratching piggies backs etc? Hope Christmas has been good for you and your menagerie. I have a new problem in one Harry Geldard Dixon c.1889 but the Dixon is his adopted name and I don't know the date of his adoption. Guessing his original surname could have been Geldard, I found a Harry Marsden Geldard born Hunslet Mar Q 1888. Please could you find him in 1891 as I cannot see him in 1901. Many thanks, David

Kate Shaw Report 22 Dec 2006 15:07

Hi Penelope thanks for the offer. I have the following family living at Angel Lanes Aston under Lyne in 1861. James Shaw 55 watchman Elizabeth Shaw 54 Mary Shaw 27 frame tenter, cotton Sarah Shaw 25 Robert Shaw 16 They were living next door to James (21) and Mary Shaw who I think was their son. (I know from James and Mary's marriage cert that his father was also James). All of the above are listed as born in Oldham. If you could find any of them in 1841 or 51 I would be very grateful. Thanks again Kate

Hi Penelope, Just found a Thomas Milne Sim. Father James Sim and Mother Ann Henderson born at Peterhead, Aberdeen 1860 died 1862. Does this help any thought he would be on 1861 census with brother James. I'm still looking. If I find anything else I'll let you know. Thanks Brenda.

Brenda

Brenda Report 21 Dec 2006 22:43

Hi Penelope, This could quite possibly be them. They have proven to be the impossible couple. I have been on Scotlands People and IGI but there is no marriage to be found. The son I have is Edward born 1872. His Marriage cert shows his parents as James Sim - Ann Henderson. His birth cert shows the same but includes the marriage place and date. As you say there are loads of James Sim in Aberdeen I know I've been though quite a lot looking for them. James the son was born in Peterhead, Aberdeen. They are going to be my mystery family. Lol. I'll get them one day. Very grateful to you for trying anyway. Thanks Brenda.

Brenda Report 21 Dec 2006 18:33

Hi Penelope, Can you look for a James Sim born 1836c and Ann born 1838c this was from 1881 census. On your 1861 census. Was told they married in 1856 14th June Longside, although I have yet to find their marriage certificate and ann's surname was Henderson. They had one son James born 1857 in Aberdeen. Who I found on the 1881 census there was several other children but they are born from 1867 onwards all at Aberdeen, there is a large gap in the childrens ages so assume there are more. James was a lucky find to be living with them at 24 years old. Their address was 35, Wellington Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen in 1881. James's occupation was listed as Labr ( at quarry) but have been told that he was also a labourer at Kittybrewster station. The son Jame's occupation was listed as stacker railway. Sorry this is all I have any help appreciated. Thanks Brenda.

That's brilliant, Pen. With a name as common as muck as mine in an area which bred lots of Clarks, the family must have been quite difficult to find. Were all the family born in that area, or just the children? It would appear that John Clark had been previously married before 1841, (as it was common practice in inner London to name eldest son/daughter after the parents). It's also possible that he'd been widowed again before 1861, as FreeBMD records the death of several Mary Anns in that area in the 1850s. Merry Xmas and many thanks for your help over the year. Kev

Hi Penelope Thank you very much for all the info on Ruler family. I have printed it and trying to put all on my family tree. I know that there were steam train engineers in family so the occupation of engineer of Robert John Ruler on 1851 census fits in. As you say the name must be Ruler not Rider. Thanks Sandra
