Hi, Looking for a birth lookup for my Great Grandfather have tried before but don't think that Dalton has been transcribed. James Shepherd Born?1844 Dalton ,Lancashire Mother Ann Father Joseph Allinson Born Dalton Lancashire Don't think the father's name will be on the birth cert as there is a notation on his death cert that the name should not be there. He immirgrated to Australia and married a Mary Bryant. They married in 1874. Have the information that he was born in Dalton from some of the death notices's in the newspaper.Any information would be great. Thanks for any help. Sue |

Hiya, I live in Barrow, next town over from Dalton. If you have anything else that needs looking up (requiring the records office etc), I'd be happy to help. Liz |

That's a fair point. There are several Daltons lol. I never even considered that. I'm not sure when Dalton began to be Dalton in Furness. To Clarify there are now three Daltons that were in Lancs. Dalton (in Furness) which is now in Cumbria. (from what I've seen of census returns it's usually just listed as Dalton) This is the one that I live by. Dalton, Burton-on-Kendal (Lancs border with Westmorland) Dalton, Wigan. Liz |

Hi Sue, have checked 1843-1845 and cannot see another born either in Wigan or Kendal, maybe you are unlucky and he was not registered, it was not compulsary until 1875. OR if you are not sure which Dalton, it could be the one Deborah found. |

Since the birth is c.1844, it could be that it wasn't registered at all (not compulsory until 1875) so there may not be a birth certificate to find. Have you found them on an early census. which might give an indication of which Dalton it was? Kath. x |

Hi Liz, zThanks for th reply. As i live in Oz don't know anything about the districts in England.Have been trying to trace this birth for about the last 12 months but no joy.It is through his birth cert htat i think he might have been born out of wedlock, because of notification on the death cert that Joseph allinson as father should not have been noted. Any help would be great. Thanks Sue |

They were all at it Sue with the age changing... some just didn't know how old they were and some did it so they could get married without parental response. They're all as bad as each other *winks* Have you tried finding his mother on the 1841 census, if you can find it, the other entries around it on the original image will give an indication of which dalton (hopefully lol) |

I wouldn't rely on the age on the headstone being right either. My grandmother's headstone said she was 44 when she died. She was actually only 42. Kath. x |
