The stillbirth register is not open to the public. Only the parents of the child can get a copy of the certificate, or if the parents are dead then a full sibling can get it (although not half-siblings). If you ring the GRO in Southport and ask for the Stillbirth Section, they will send out a form for the relative to fill in. However I think at the very beginning of registration for stillbirths which was in 1927, not all of the stillbirths would neccessarily been registered (just as not all live births were registered in the early years of registration after 1837). Yes thats right-a baby would only be recorded on births and deaths if he/she took one independent breath-therefre living-even if only for a few moments. other wise would be registered as a stillbirth. early stillbirths weren't registered at all-and the babes were usually buried along with the undertakers next 'customer'.very sad. |

I believe the stillbirth register started around 1927 so he would be on that list that isnt open for general view .the nearest relative would have to apply for the record. Google 'Stillbirth register' for info |

Hi, can anybody give me information on how a stillborn childs birth gets registered. is it still the same, im trying to help solve a mystery about a younger brother my grandma had, but sadley was stillborn, due to a heavy fall her mother had while carrying him. i cant find any birth registered. This was in 1932/33 and the surname was Schofiled and mothers maiden name of Cross, but there was nothing under them names. My grandma said she called him Oscar but wasnt sure if that was a nickname or not. Any help appreciated. Sonya |
