Hi There Just wanted some imput on a query i have. I have found a relative Catherine Sharman on the 1881 census which has her birth year approx 1854, the marriage cert for her in 1871 has her aged 21 but her birth cert says 1853. Would the marriage cert have an incorrect date? Just want to check i have all the same ancestor Any ideas?? Kind regards Kelly

If you are sure she is the right person, I'd go for the birth cert. being right. Young brides often seemed to 'up' their age so that they didn't appear to need parental consent. Gwyn

well!! she could have lied to get married without parental permission. This would have been needed if she was under 21.

My motto is that you must expect your ancestors to have lied at least once in their lives! I know all of mine did, and some lied all the time! Wendy
