I have an ancestor who was a master mariner. His last ship set sail in 1885. Legend has it he died in Malta but I have found no evidence. Have checked Lloyds list and deaths abroad. His wife was a widow by 1891. Did he die or do a runner!! His name was William Shipley. Wendy

Thank you Keith but I have checked deaths abroad. I was hoping there may be a member who lives in Malta!

Must have been me--it works fine, many thanks to you both. The site is brilliant but sadly no William Shipley. I'm not surprised. His ship the Petriana, left in early 1885 bound for USA, not Malta! there is no record of a wreck or accident but there is no further record of him in the Captain's register either. So he died or disappeared in 1885. In America? A deserter? Leaving a wife and 6 children? Somehow his previous story doesn't suggest this. An unsolved mystery I fear.

Hi Wendy Just as a last check does he have a seamen's register on Documents Online. I think the only possible one is William Shipley born 7 August 1835 in Hull. The rest are born to late if he sailed on his last ship in 1885. Regards Gail.

Thank you Gail but my William was b. 1842 South Shields. He had Master's cert number 85662--later 'lost at sea' and replaced with number 97135. I have traced his merchant service from his apprenticeship at age 13 to his disappearance in 1885! Just a forlorn last hope! I think he did a runner in USA--or perhaps died there? Who knows.
