Find Ancestors

I have located the marriage of William Knowles to Jane Hubbard in Mar 1881 in Bourne and Jane's birth in Sept 1959. I have found them in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census. In 1871 Census William is living with his mother and in 1861 he is living with his parents in Aslackby where he was born. My question is what registration district is Aslackby in as I'm having trouble locating his birth. He would have been born in abt 1857 in Aslackby Lincolnshire. Thanks in advance Heather

Reg, If registration wasn't compulsory why does the marriage come up??? Is it because it had to be registered by the church and the birth by the parents? I know a stupid question. Heather

Yes, the marriage was recorded by the registrar/vicar...births were up to the parents, and I believe there was a fee, although I'm not 100% on that aspect of it......... Reg

Reg, Thankyou. I have census info back to 1861 but wasn't sure where to go from there? 1861 census states that Samuel was born in Ashwell Rutlandshire and Grace in Pointon Lincolnshire. Heather

Reg I believe the old fee for baptism was sixpence before abolishment not 100% sure though. I semi remember seeing parish registers where the vicar had written 6d beside the record, also made a lot of entries for parish relief that did not require payment of the 6d. (cunning devil, did not believe in payment). Keith
