I must admit this particular census has me puzzled. To explain, Henry B (middle name Beardsall although mis-spealt on some census entries) Hicking born Nottinghamshire 1845, married Mary Elizabeth Abbott and had lots of children (and I mean lots if you beleive the census) I have copies of his birth, census entries from 1851 through to 1901 and I think his marriage in 1870. on the 1891 Ancestry UK cover sheet it shows a whole tribe if kiddies but.... on the census itself (when you view image) I am blowed if I can find them at all. I have gone a few pages back and forth and still can't see them. When you view the list of all people on the page the Hickings are but a few.... so, why can't I see them and why do the two lists appear to differ (by about 10 kids). Can somebody have a look to see if they can make sense of the entry? If they really do have all these children then poor Mary had 18 in total! ps.... Abbotts also showing on page... wonder if they are related to Mary? Di |

Hi Dianne Don't know whether it helps but the census image page 28 at the bottom although badly written appears to be the Hicking family appearing after the Abbotts. There looks to be Henry and Mary plus 4 children on page 28 and 8 Hicking children on page 29.Looks like Mathew Abbott listed on the same census page as grandfather/grandpa was Mary's father and Luke listed as Head of the family was Mary's brother.(I cross referenced with the 1851and 1861 census for Mathew) Best wishes Diane |

Di, the family are split over two pages on the census, although the transcription shows them all as one family. Pages 28 and 29 show 12 children. Keith |

Thanks Diane and yes it does help. I have blown the image up on my PC to maximum and can just about work the writing out to read Hicking. And you right, the rest of the kids appear on the next page. Now got to work out how come earlier census have the children born as early as 1868 yet the marriage isnt until later. But there again, one person in my tree ages by 17 years (lol and yes it is the same person) between two consecutive censuses! So census ages really must be treated as a guide only. Di |
