Just a possible death, from the CWGC: Name: DAVIE, EDWARD Initials: E Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Unit Text: 1st Bn. Date of Death: 25/01/1915 Service No: 2183 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panels 24 to 26. Memorial: LE TOURET MEMORIAL No age given, unfortunately. Your Edward would have been 43-ish by then, so maybe a bit old to have been a private in the trenches? The above soldier was with a Scottish regiment though... Richard

In free BMD there are several Margaret Hain marriages in the late 1850's where the husband has not yet been transcribed - might be worth following up....

Kate Thanks for finding the marriage which obviously rules out that it could be an error on bmd . Kathy

Thanks Sheila and thanks Mags for the census info Looks like 2 births but how strange both those names on same page . Wonder what the odds would be on that happening . Looks like this one won't be solved .May find out more when 1911 census released if Edward lived that long and he listed where he was born not just England . Cheers Kathy

Kathy, I think it is very unlikely that Ernest and Margaret's marriage could have been indexed as births by mistake. Anyway, it looks likely that Ernest Ralph Davies really was born in 1871 given his marriage entry: Births Jun 1871 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Davies Ernest Ralph Lambeth 1d 382 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Sep 1898 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAVIES Ernest Ralph Lambeth 1d 711 Kate.

Kathy Islington and Lambeth are opposite ends of London. Islington in the North and Lambeth in the South. Sheila

Mags I agree does seem too much of a coinsidence . There is a birth entry for a Edward James Davies Dec quarter 1871 in Islington .My geography of London is not good but I don't suppose it is that far from Lambeth . I have no idea where his parents are from and searching Scottish census has turned up no results . I would feel happier if I could find them on census but with the combination of possible Davies Davie etc I have hit brick walls ! Kathy

Mags & Nicky Report 8 Oct 2006 22:28

I think it would be worth contacting the register office to ask the question. I'm sure they would look for you? It seems very coincidental. Perhaps it be also be worth checking forwards for both names in that area to see if they exist separately, it may eliminate them. ... On that basis here is a possible for Ernest Ernest Davie Richard,Rhoda abt 1872 Son Lambeth and Margaret ... Margaret Hain abt 1872 Lambeth, Surrey, Orphan Beddington

Keith Thanks for looking . I agree there is no trace of a marriage for Ernest and Margaret .What I thought was odd is that both those names should appear on birth entries on the same page that's why I wonder if it is a mistake on bmd Also I can find nothing on census for an Ernest who is a cabinet maker with or without Margaret . Hi, Do you have any idea WHERE Edward was actually born? Could it have been in Scotland or is it more likely it was England? What about his parents, have you any idea of where they were born? Thanks Mags

Kathy, Ernest Ralph does not appear in the full marriage index for June quarter 1871, that could be a likely time though if Edward James was the firstborn. Though they do both appear in the full BIRTH index. Keith

Been searching for years about to give up unless one of you clever people can find them. Edward James Davie married in Scotland in 1898 he gave his age as 26 occupation seaman merchant service . Father Ernest Davie a cabinet maker still alive and mother Margaret Hain deceased. The Scottish 1901 census shows him aged 29 born in England .He must have died before 1924 when his widow re married .( can't find his death ) Edward had 3 children and each time he calls himself DAVIES not Davie . I have been unable to find him on 1881 or 1891 census .I also can not find a marriage for his parents . I have tried Davies Davie Davey and Davis . When searching for a birth of Ernest on freebmd I found June quarter 1871 Lambeth 1d 382 Ernest Ralph Davies AND a Margaret Hain .Do you think this could be an error and it should be marriages ???? Any help greatly appreciated Kathy
