Hi, Hope someone can help..... I'm looking for a 1971 census check on George Powell, born 1860 in Yorkshire. Brother was called Frank and mother Sarah Ann Powell. Also Sarah Ann Powell (born c1838 PICKERING) married twice, I've no idea what her 1st husband was called but he was a Powell, has anyone got any ideas how to find him? The second was called Francis Grainger. If you could help would be great. Many Thanks Naomi |

I think ED refers to the enumaration district if they were on land Others could refer to ships or institutions Below could be their marriage Kay Marriages Sep 1863 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grainger Francis York 9d 67 Powell Sarah York 9d 67 |

Hiya, Well this is where it gets complicated. We know her maiden name was Sellers her father was Francis Sellers. But on her 2nd marraige cert her name is down as Sarah Ann Powell. I presume meaning she married someone Powell first. She then married Francis Grainger and became Sarah Ann Grainger. Children wise George W Grainger Powell was born in 1860 - you'll notice he has Grainger as his middle name - so I'm guessing she might have met Francis Grainger by that point. George has then dropped the 'Powell' surname later on in his life. Frank his brother we know nothing about only that he was born in 1862 in Bootham,York as Frank Grainger Powell (same story). Does that make anymore sense!!!!my heads spinning!!!! Any ideas would be fab Thanks Naomi |

Much clearer now and thanks for maiden name - looks as though George's father was Francis but will look for previous husband |

Hi again Can't find a marriage for Sarah pre 1860 or find her in census pre 1861. Could her father have been Francis Sellers and her mother unmarried - Sarah gave her origins as Pickering in 1851 and there is a Francis below in 1851 who would fit the bill although no sign of a Sarah born to him on the IGI. The only alternative I can see is to go through the complete index on Anc which is free Unfort have to go now but will check back later Good Luck Kay Francis Sellar Age: 58 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1793 Relation: Head Spouses's Name: Margaret Gender: Male Where born: Edston, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Pickering Town: Pickering County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Spilsby Sub-registration district: Wainfleet All Saints ED, institution, or vessel: 5d Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 12 Household Members: Name Age Ann Sellar 21 Francis Sellar 58 Margaret Sellar 59 |
