Seriously wondering about his surname, since I can't find a likely Herbert Wilmot/Willmot/Willmot/Wilmott/Wilmott/Willmott anywhere before 1891. Perhaps he chose a surname before he married? Since he doesn't put a father's name on his marriage cert, it can't be to hide his illegitimacy. Perhaps he had another secret? Or maybe he wasn't being accurate about being born in St Pancras - he might have come from elsewhere?

1881 - perhaps. Image says Billen, but it might have been misheard? I can't find a Herbert Willmott or anything else like it. Registration district: Croydon Sub registration district: Croydon 6, The Pavement, Annerley Road, Penge Surrey [mistranscribed on Ancestry as 6 the Basement!] Herbert J. Billen 21 abt 1860 Servant St Pancras, Middlesex Occupation: Cheesemongers Asst Household Members William G. T. North 32 cheesemonger Susan North 29 Herbert T. North 6 Earnest J. North 4 William H. North Younger Than 2 Herbert J. Billen 21 It looks like they were living above or at the back of the shop. It may be coincidence that the North's eldest boy as the same first name as your Herbert, or perhaps there is a family connection?

I have found several illegitimate births registered before 1875, so it might well be that Herbert was illegitimate, and maybe registered with his mother's maiden name. Mother then may have married and Herbert taken her married name.

The odds are that the birth wasn't registered.......for two reasons; one, that he was probably illegitimate, and two, that registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. Reg

Valmai, What's his address and occupation on the marriage certificate? Rose

Assistance please to find the birth registration of Herbert WILLMOTT. All documentation gathered indicates he was born in St Pancras C1860. Herbert married Judith LAWRENCE in Islington in 1883. There is no father's name recorded on the marriage certificate. I have been unable to find information prior to 1883. Many thanks, Valmai
