i have found a connection with my great great grandad george newman abt 1822 from box wiltshire who was a furnessman in an iron works... he married a lady called vashti abt 1811 she came from penhurst berkshire... they married and lived in minster in sheppey and had a little girl called isabella in 1852... this came from the 1861 census george was 39 then and vashti was 50.. i presume that they only had one little girl she was a laundress... any hints as to where i can find the pre married surname of vashti.. i have tried but failed... ilona thanks in advance

Or you can go to the Berkshire records office and trawl through the baptism registers. Vashti is a very uncommon name, so it should be easy to spot. Alternatively, you can order parish register microfilm at your nearest LDs centre, or contact the Berkshire Family History Society to see if they can help.

1851 George and Vashti are married George Newman Age: 29 abt 1822 born: Kingsdown, Wiltshire, Head Spouses's Name: Vashti Vashti Newman Age: 41 abt 1810 Relation: Wife Spouses's Name: George Where born: Tilehurst, Berkshire She has a different birthplace here! Chances are, as they have no children in 1851 that they married shortly before, so you could go through the marriage indexes for George to see if you can find the wedding.

Tilehurst is on the IGI but I can't see Vashti.

According to www.streetmap*co.uk there is no Penhurst in Berkshire.
