Are there any kind people out there who would be going to the above? I am looking for a marriage record of John Whiteman and Elizabeth Adams, married on 16th February 1878 in the district of Marylebone. I have checked this out and it should be located at the Islington office. I would just like to find out parents names and any witnesses etc. Likewise if anyone needs a lookup General Register House, Edinburgh I am planning a trip on 30th October, would be pleased to help. Thanks

Lynne that won't be at the London office the only way you will get the fathers names is by buying the maariage certificate, the marriage certificates in Scotland hold more information than English ones Margaret

The FRC at Islington only holds the volumes of Gro Refs the same as you can search on Ancestry you will have to buy the cert for details. Shirley

To see the marriage cert you can a) get the GRO reference and order a copy of the cert for £7 from the GRO online. The ref should be on Freebmd or if not, the complete index images, free to search on Ancestry. b) find the parish marriage register. Marylebone church registers will be at the Westminster Archives.

The marriage cert will give the bride and groom's fathers' names and occupations. But as you've discovered these people, you can find them, married, on the census and get their place and year of birth from that, and then look for a baptism, birth registration or find them on an earlier census to obtain their parents' details.

This is the reference you need to order the marriage cert: John Whiteman 1878 Mar Marylebone Volume: 1a Page: 817 Marylebone registration district would include several churches, chapels and indeed the register office. Order online here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Lynne, your best bet would be to order the marriage cert. If you could find out what church the marriage took place in, it is possible that somebody would be able to look the marriage up in the parish register at the London Metropolitan Archives, but if you only have the name of the district and the quarter it was registered, it would mean somebody trawling through 3 months worth of marriages for a lot of churches! And of course, if the marriage took place at the register office then there will not be a copy of the cert at the LMA anyway. Kate.
