hi all. i feel i just had to talk to someone abt this it's eating me up. my son is 8yrs old goes to a cof e school where now we are being over-populated by the jewish community. He is being taught lessons abt jews even making jewish cups, today he asked the teacher if jewish children were learning abt our religion, the teacher replied 'NO' he asked why not.and her reply came'because i said so' we are not a racist family, but shouldnt the school be putting more effort into giving extra help to children who are falling behind. hope i dont get expelled after this message. can i ask 'should i speak to the head abt this, any advice welcome. gwen x |

Hello Gwen I understand your concern, and I would advise you to go to the school and talk to the teacher and ask her to show you examples of the curriculum. Speaking as an ex teacher I know that we were encouraged to expose children to all kinds of cultures, and to be Jewish is not just all about the religion, it is a culture as well. We did do the Menorah, and the dreidel and such things around Hannukah time, just to show the children something about other ways of life. Of course we also investigated other cultures as well. Perhaps this is just learning about the Jewish culture and not so much religion. You won't know unless you go to the school and ask though. Best of luck with this. |

I don't see it as a case of learning about the Jewish religion OR children having extra help. There will be a syllabus to follow regarding R.E. and the children do now learn about other religions, including the Jewish faith. One would have thought that any children of whatever faith in a C of E school will have predominately Christian teaching so I don't know what the teacher means by not teaching it. You could ask to speak to the Head or the RE coordinator to ask just what is taught. The idea of the teaching is surely to create better understanding, not cause rifts. Gwyn |
