Get your father's birth cert.............it will tell you the names of his parents...........then work backwards. The procedure is the same as I've outlined on your other thread.............. Reg |

Have you got any of your older relatives still alive, if so talk to them ask them their parents names and their grandparents names. See if you can get back to 1901 that way, the go the censuses and work from there. |

There are 1000's of Charltons in the world who originally come from Northumberland. It is one of the old Reiver families who used to roam the English/Scottish border, raiding, robbing and murdering their neighbours when they got hungry, or fell out with each other. This practise was stopped when King James became King of both Eng & Scotland. A lot of the reivers and their descendants were transported to Ireland - or drifted away due to the agricultural and Industrial revolutions. Fortunately, they're a lot more civilised these days - well the one I married is! If you google 'Border Reiver' you should find out a lot more. There's also a good museum at Hexham Gaol which is dedicated to the Reivers. There have been many Charltons who were familiar with the inside of Hexham Gaol! |
