Thanks to everyone for their help. I have marriage certs for Daniel and Walter. I guess I was just looking to get a birth cert for Margaret as final proof that Daniel was her father, especially as he has gone through life from being Button to Burton and back again! In fact Margaret ended up doing the same - dialect I guess. I will look at everyones suggestions and contact the DRO Thanks again Joanna |

Hi Joanna, Durham RO will copy and send entries from the registers for £2 per copy. You will need to write to them giving all the info you have if you want more than one entry copying. If you only want one, they will take the order over the phone, and then send the cheque onto them! Debbie |

Hi Joanna Daniel Burton = Mary A Newton DE/C-E/L1 - 224 - Durham Eastern (1874) Christ Church, New Seaham.. also a Walter Button = Esther Thew DE/C-E/L1 - 379 - Durham Eastern (1884) Christ Church, New Seaham.. These are both at the same church.. If you contact Durham Records Office either by letter or by phone or by Email and ask if they could do you a copy of each marriage.. Wont cost you anywhere near the £7 each from the register office.. If you say in your Email or letter.. Looking for a marriage of Daniel Burton = Mary A Newton at Christ Church, New Seaham.. the year is 1884 and the register entry is 224 do the same for the other marriage..if you get these.. you might be able to shed a little light on whether the name is Button or Burton..as you might find that the father's name match etc.. Its worth getting them both.. Mo |

I'm a little bit confused about what you want somebody to do. If you want a copy of the baptism record, you can order a transcription from Durham Records Online, or ask the record office if they can do it, or see if anybody on here is going, but the baptism record will almost certainly not have the mother's maiden name on it anyway. BUT if you want somebody to do a copy of it for you, you would need to tell them the name of the church where the baptism took place, and it looks as if you have to buy credits on Durham Records Online to find that out. It does say 'district Easington', but I have no idea how many churches would be in that district (hmmm, looks as if it could be quite a few!). If you are looking for her birth certificate, you can search the GRO indexes online, or you can try ordering the cert from whatever register office you think is the right one, but there would be nothing at Durham Record Office to help with that anyway (well, except presumably microfiches or microfilms of the GRO indexes). Kate. |

I'm sure Durham RO will send you a photocopy if you e-mail them...............I doubt if they will charge too much. Reg |

The birth cert will not tell you anything you don't know, apart from her actual date of birth, and the address at which it occurred......... Where was Daniel born? Where and when did he marry Mary Newton? Reg |

I am trying to find Margaret Jane Button baptised 12 December 1886. Her parents are Daniel Button and Mary Newton. Margaret and her father have flitted through history as either Button or Burton - trying to confuse us all. The only proof I can find is her baptism on Durham Records Online but this does not have her mother's maiden name. And I don't have a GRO number to be able to order a certificate. If anyone is going to Durham RO and was able to get me a photocopy or a GRO number I would be eternally grateful! Joanna |
