They are very disappointing as certs go aren't they!! hardly worth all the bother. One of mine (a birth cert) gives the name of the child, son of blankety blank and wife blankety blank and I yet have a marriage cert for the Blankety B parents for four years post birth of son!!! Surely the army would know whether the couple were in fact married or not when the child was born? Something wrong somewhere! M |

Michelle. My certs arrived today. Got them through 1837online. Tick the overseas section(even though yours wasn't born overseas... one of mine was born Camberwell) so go for it! Good luck. Thanks Moe in muddle for suggesting it! |

Michelle, I have now ordered mine from the 1837 site. it seems easier and they don't ask for the quarter. Will let you know when/if they arrive. If they do I suggest you apply for yours that way to. One is the birth of a person the GRO said they couldn't find!. Thanks to whoever on here suggested this way of doing it. M |

Michele You have to apply to the GRO as the local register offices don't hold regimental records. The regimental records are not done by quarter so just quote the details that are in the index (name, regiment, year, page - where these are given in the index). If you're ordering via the GRO website, make sure that you tick the ''overseas'' births, not the usual births, as they are dealt with by a different dept within the GRO. The info that you will get is compiled from the regimental baptism registers, and this usually means that you will not get the mother's maiden name on the cert. This might also explain why his birth wasn't registered in the England/Wales index - i.e. he could have been born abroad (or at sea) and then baptised upon his father's return to barracks at Woolwich. Cheers Richard |

Thanks Moe. I have ordered asked Lewisham records, they can't find it and suggested Greenwich which I did before seeing your message. If no joy with Greenwich then I shall do as you suggest. Thanks again, Michele x |

I too am trying to get a birth cert under same circumstances as you. 1837 give a GRO number but no quarter. I sent off for cert on line but ONS couldn't find it.(They refunded £4) Mine was for a birth in Camberwell. I am now going to try again, by post, enclosing copy of the image from 1837. Perhaps you could try writing to the Register office in Lewisham and the other place with details of the births and maybe they can find yours. Good luck! M |

I have been on 1837 on GRO Regimental birth Indices and looked up Charles Stone born 1848 Woolwich No quarter is given. Does anyone know if you can order certificates if they were born within the military? I have looked him up in the usual indexes there are two Charles's born , one in Lewisham and one Greenwich and it isn't him as it is the wrong parents. Any ideas? Michele x |
