Any more info on James Smith please - where/when born?

Eileen

Eileen Report 17 Aug 2006 13:42

Hi Christine. You've turned up some great stuff for me ! I'm getting a bit bogged down now and will have to re-group my info. There is definitely a connection with 'Savage' as one of my Smith ancestors [ my grandfather I think]turned up on a census with her as her nephew..... James Smith would be his grandfather I think. I only have his son John's marriage cert. to Mary Ann Cox.in 1871- which of course gives just his name - oh silly me!!! So sorry - I've just seen he was deceased! Still - he should have been around in 1861 ? Tunbridge Wells or Canterbury would be the likely places. thanks again Eileen

Hi Christine I've also just noticed that Hester Ann Savage is a witness on said marriage between John Smith and Mary Ann Cox !! You're a real treasure .....

Christine

Christine Report 17 Aug 2006 14:17

Here's Hester Savage in 1881 Name: Hester Ann Savage Age: 35 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1846 Relation: Wife Spouses's Name: Robert Where Born: Canterbury, Kent, England Civil parish: Maidstone County: Kent Street address: 14 Stacey Passage Condition as to marriage: Married Occupation: Laundress Registration district: Maidstone Sub registration district: East Maidstone Household Members: Hester Ann Savage 35 Richard J. Savage 1 Robert Savage 38 Any info on John Smith married to Mary Ann Cox to help locate him on any census - I can't see Mary Ann Smith 1850, born Canterbury on 1881.

Eileen

Eileen Report 17 Aug 2006 15:54

I see that Mary Ann is on the 1871 census you sent -age 21yrs - which is right.!871 is also the year she married John Smith[ middle name James].He was born 1839 in Tunbridge Wells.

Eileen

Eileen Report 17 Aug 2006 15:56

Meant to also say p'raps she died before the next census 1881 - I'd better search deaths I think....

Now I am confused! John James Smith's father was ?James - or was that his grandfather? Exactly what information do you have on John James Smith - he married Mary Ann Cox in 1871 (after the census). He was a tailor. I assume this info is from marriage cert. He was born in 1839, Tunbridge Wells - where did that come from please? I have found a possible in 1851, but father is Thomas, so not posting, in case I muddy the water further!

Eileen

Eileen Report 17 Aug 2006 23:34

So sorry about the confusion and sorry I haven't replied sooner - I've been out for the evening .... I'll refer to John James Smith as John Smith. I got his birth year from his age when he got married 32yrs in 1871. His father on the certificate is James Smith. They were both Tailors. The address is High St. Tunbridge Wells.I deduced that John must have been born there because he also had a son born there called , confusingly ,Thomas born 1874.... I'm so sorry to have been a pain about this as you have been so helpful and kind. Anyway - the Cox's you found for me were very interesting and have given me leads to follow there. The Smiths are a real pain and I also have difficulties with ancestors called Osborne - but I won't push my luck at the moment !! regards Eileen
