Hi Jamie Hope this helps Annuitant Receiver of an Annuity - An annuity is income paid to a beneficiary at regular intervals, for a fixed period or ascertainable period (usually the lifetime of a nominee) in return for a lump sum payment having been previously made into the scheme by a subscriber - i.e. a spouse, benefactor or employer Sounds a bit like a pension Diane

It means someone in receipt of a private income such as a pension

Hi It is my understanding that in most cases annuitants had independent means of support and I think were generally people who were better off than the average person. In many cases, I think they inherited money. In part of my tree, I have ancestors who were only 40 years of age who are listed in the census as annuitants. They would have inherited their income from family wealth. Listings for people who were aged were quite often listed as unemployed or retired or even as paupers.......as some others in my family tree are listed. Regards Walter
