Have foubnd births of Charles Parkhouse 1910 AMJ Exeter 5b 75 and Edward Parkhouse 1910 AMJ Exeter 5b 75 AS they have the same quarter and Vol and page-would that mean they are twins-or just coincidence-also if I ordered a cert for one-would it say if they were one of a twin? Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds highly likely that they are twins. You may find time of birth which would possibly confirm this. I dont think the certificate itself will state its a twin birth The only way you will know for certain is to order the other certificate as well Sue

When I found references like this I wrote to the Register office where the registration had taken place and requested the birth certificate of one of them. I added a note that I was trying to establish whether or not the 2 boys were twins. When I received the cert. a note was enclosed saying N.B. Daniel was a twin. They didn't say who to but the references told me that really. Gwyn

If a child is a twin, or one of a multiple birth, there will be a time on the birth certificate as well as the date. Therefore you should be able to get away with ordering one certificate to prove or disprove the twins theory. This happened in my husbands tree and I was able to get away with the one birth certificate and, unfortunately, the death certificate for the other twin. Helen :-)

Sometimes you will find non-twin births with the same surname, district, volume and page number just because their surname was a very common one in that particular area. I have no idea whether Parkhouse was / is a common name in Exeter, though. Kate.

There were several families ! I'll go for the Obvious one though-Charles was the Man I have so may have called his son Charles as well?. Here's hoping.

I have just been talking to someone about some birth registrations found on Ancestry for 1995. From the information it would seem that twins were born, - fairly unusual surname, with same mother's maiden name -and I said it looked like twins but my friend recognised the names and said that she didn't recall them being twins. Looking at the bigger picture she found that what I saw were re-registrations of children born earlier to the same couple but being re-registered this time after the parents' marriage. We can't assume anything with this hobby, can we? Gwyn

For those of you that want to apply for certs of Twins ( or you think are Possibly Twins) I have Twins and not only do they have their time of birth it also states on the cert TWIN I or TWIN II my boys were born in 1997 but it's handy to know, i am unsure how far back as to when they started putting this on the certs, but it could help those who have very very common surnames establish Twins in their families K x

Kath, I have one from 1891 which doesn't say 'twin'; the only clue is time of birth. Kate.

Thanks everyone! My mum has just said to me that they used to put the time as well_mainly because of eldest son inheriting land/property. Bummer if you were the second twin by only a few minutes!!

How common a surname was Parkhouse in the Exeter reg district?

Familyfinder

Familyfinder Report 5 Jul 2006 20:38

Not that common-but the person I think was the father of at least one had two or three younger brothers-so could really be any of them!-only way is to order more certs I fear-although I am hopefully checking school admissions records to check some deatils-which would show Father at least as well.

I have twin boys born in 2003, nowhere on both their certificates does it state they are twins! It just has their times of births. At least if you order one cert & see a time you would be able to tell if they are one of a twin. Teresa

Teresa A time sometimes does not mean that they were twins. I have a birth cert with a time of Birth on and the person in Question is not a twin......The registrar at the time when the children were registered.. he liked to record the times of birth on the entries... but I also have a cert for a twin and the time is on that one..but I know he was one of twins as I had seen the Baptism records.. Jennifer Report 6 Jul 2006 15:32

Just to add to what MO said, I have two births with the same GRO reference, the certificates also show the times of birth, but they were the children of two sisters, who both happened to give birth to illegitemate babies on the same day. Jennifer

AAAGGH!! I think the only way then is to order both certs and check the names of parents on both!! Thanks everyone for all your advice! Didn't realise there were two Devonshire Dumplings-hope its not going to be a problem-if so I'll transfigure into something else!!!! how about a South- west slimmer! (trying to anyway!)
