Deborah - I'm crushed on this one. The other McPherson's don't appear to match up. My James McP came down from Scotland with the Royam Marines so I cant link him with the head of family. This will have to remain a mystery. I very much appreciate your efforts, thank you so much. Regards Roy

I just can't see Mary & Frederick........... the Frederick John McPherson found earlier is a real strong contender......... can you ID any of the family members he is with?? Could he be your Frederick but living with his grandfather's brother maybe??? If James is at sea maybe Mary Ann is in service or poorly?? or recorded under Russell?? Im afraid nothing is leaping out.

Deborah- I did see that in 1841. His father James was in the Royal Marines so in his blood obviously. Your right he could have been at sea but I'd expect to find the wife and son, exasperating this one. Roy

Have you seen the 1841 census where it states james jnr as a Sailor? Could it be that he is at sea on the night of census 1851? however can not find you Mary or frederick..........

Deborah In 1871 the family are in Plumstead. My whole family comes from Plumstead or Woolwich and their professions seemded to centre around the Woolwich Arsenal, even the women. Roy

Kate I hadn't thought of that so I haven't tried it. I dont have Walters brith cert but the 61 census has him born in Woolwich. Frederick was born in Halfway Street, Bexley. Roy

Do you have the addresses where Frederick and Walter were born, from their birth certificates? And have you tried looking up those addresses on the 1851 census? Kate.

Ah right........ will work with the 1861 census.......... Have you found the family moves around abit in latter census? I ask as james occupation is Stoker Engine Driver in the 1861 census

Deborah, those ones don't fit. I've tried all combinations I could think of such as Mc Pherson, McPherson, Mcpheron etc. but a big blank. Clearly the family couldn't afford the older brother buit I would have expected them to be together in 51.

Has anyone found a way around a complete drawn blank in a census even if you've tried the most imaginative name interpretation? I'm trying, still, to find James McPherson born 25/7/1824 and wife Mary Ann nee Russell born May 1825 approx, and their child Frederick John 26/3/1850. The couple were married 23/4/1849. The family were either in North Cray Kent, or Plumstead/Woolwich (also Kent at the time now London). They had an illigitimate son, aslo James McPherson, and I can find him in 1851 with his maternal grandparents in North Cray. I can find the family in 1861. HHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP
