Lol Suzanne, I'd think I'd better disown Charles the prisoner in Winchester now! I don't want my grandfather to have been a lag! A shoe maker doesn't sound too nefarious though! Have just looked at the BMD's for Annie Elizabeth Morris - loads of them - well - at least 6 possibles/probables. Think I really need a Samuel Morris, Butcher in East London or maybe the Billericay area of Essex in the mid 1870's - which does seem a tall order! Thankyou so much for spending so much time on this. I really am grateful Rosi

Cant see Harriet or Edwin in the same place as Charles but found this Harriet in 1871: Harriet Swan Jefreys abt 1853 Shoreditch, Middlesex, England Adopted Daughter St Leonard Shoreditch London Adopted by the Kemp family (wifes maiden name was Swan though so thought it was her child that the husband had adopted but when I checked the 1861 census bothe husband and wife where there and no Harriet???) Suzanne 1881: possible sighting of Charles? Charles Jefferies abt 1860 London, Middlesex, England Prisoner Winchester Hampshire unmarried - occupation Tipster. 1891: Chas Jeffries abt 1858 Chelsea, London, England Lodger Paddington London Harriett Jeffries abt 1854 Pancras, London, England Sister Paddington London (lodgers, brother and sister, both unmarried, Chas a housepainter and Harriet a dress maker) Dont think this is them though as there is a brother and sister on 1881 census that fits tihs couple) 1901: Charles Jeffries abt 1862 London, England Servant South Shoebury Essex single, barman.

Hi Suzanne, alas - not one that's of much use - for him - Wickford - and for her Runwell - which is very close. both in Essex.

Thanks Suzanne - again! Hmm. Annie Elizabeth is stil shrouded in mystery! don't immediately think any of them are her, in spite of the Butcher dad! But yes- well worth bearing in mind. Thankyou. Lady Lib - yes- its possible. Wonder what he was doing in Wales- and can a A be written as an H? Again - have my doubts about this one - but its a good maybe! Thankyou. Carrie. O dear - poor little lad! Praps it is him. Praps he's not such a poor little chap and he is at boarding school doing an apprenticeship! Would you mind seeing if his brother Edwin, as per the 1861 above, b 1858 is thereabouts too? Thankyou! With all this help I shall need another bottle (and some more Rollos) to express proper appreciation. :) Rosi

Rosi Report 5 Apr 2006 13:57

I have certificates showing: 1) The birth of Edward Harry Jefferies in 1905, Billericay, Essex, to Charles Alfred Jefferies, a timekeeper, and Annie Elizabeth, nee Morris. 2) The marriage of Charles Alfred Jefferies to Annie Elizabeth Morris. at the Parish Church in Wickford, Billericay, Essex in 1903 He was 42, a bachelor and a clerk - his father was William Paul Jefferies, (deceased) a shoemaker. She was 27, spinster and aughter of Samuel Morris , a butcher. The witnesses don't seem to be connected to the family - Herbert Charles Harvey and Hester Jones. The problem is I cannot find their families or any further info about them. I suspect they came from the Eastend, setttling in Wickford because of the advent of the railway - but ....... Any help greatly appreciated Rosi
