I hope somebody can throw some light onto the elusive George Henry Marquiss. He is my great grandfather - that I do know from my g/father's marriage cert. I found a George Henry Marquiss marriage Sep 1896 to a Eliza Elizabeth Harley in Mile End but cannot find any entries relating to either of them pre-marriage or married in the 1901 census. Can anybody please help me.

A surname like that is highly likely to be misspelt on the census by the enumerator. Have you tried spelling it in a variety of ways? Liz

What ages were they, what were their fathers names and occupations and witness names too please?

Could he have been known by his middle name? There is a Henry Marquiss on the 1891 census at a Royal Military Asylum, in Chelsea, aged 13 as a scholar. If he went into the army he may have been abroad for the 1901 census with the Boer War. Kath. x

Susan, If you have 'found' a marriage, but do not have any more info, you need to buy the marriage cert which will give their ages, and their father's names and occupations. Until then, there is no point people bombarding you with census details because we have no idea if they are appropriate to your research or not. Do you know how to order certs? Liz

Yes, I do know how to order certs and I think that is what I will have to do. Once I have got this though it will only take me back further. How will I know from the marriage cert that I have the right great grandparents to my grandparents? (I know, another silly question!)

Do you have your grandparents' birth certs? These will give their mother's name and maiden name as well as their father's details. Without this knowledge you cannot be sure that the marriage you have found is correct. Liz

Thanks Liz , that's what I could not get my head round. Yep, will have to order grandparents' birth certs. Brill, thanks for everyones help. Steep learning curve for me. Everyone seems so good and professional. Perhaps one day I will be this good too!!
