Trixie You have to go to Kew!!!!!!!!!!! But you can use the references you have to pre-order documents or alternatively, you can ask that they photocopy them. It costs, but it is worth it. I have some beautifully copied A3 records of the original army records of a gt X 3 grandfather. nell

It looks as though he was around for his wedding. I have just found this on the NA site: Board of Trade: Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen: Central Register of Seamen: Seamen's Records ('Pouches') BT 372/599/22 R285291 CAMMISH R D 10/05/1928 SCARBOROUGH. Discharge A numbers R285268 - R285529 R285291 CAMMISH R D 10/05/1928 SCARBOROUGH Date range: 1913 - 1972. The NA site drives me mad, how do I get the info? Trixie

Denis Report 26 Mar 2006 13:08

I think we are drifting off course here. My understanding was that he was a merchant seaman. That is why he is named on the Tower Hill memorial rather than any of the armed services memorials. National Archives may well have something in their mercantile marine records. Denis.

I have just read the article in the Times. Perhaps he was a good swimmer LOL Trixie

Hi trixie Have you contacted the National Archives in Kew? You can have someone look there for you if you can't get in yourself, but they tend to charge a hefty fee, alternately you could go to the NA website and see if you can find his details yourself then once found you can apply for a copy over the net. They should definately have a record for your relative, which would include when he enlisted, where he was posted/served, his next of kin, his trade/regiment, when he was presumed dead or missing in action, his return, and any medals he was awarded. Alternatively you could contact Innesworth MOD, They should be able to point you in the right direction. I doubt they will give you too much info regarding your relative, but they could tell you where to look. I'm not one hundred persent sure, but I think that millitary records are handed over to the NA after about 25 yrs, something to do with the Data Protection Act, although I could be mistaken about this.

Brief mention of the Condor striking a mine and the probable loss of 9 lives, in The Times online Wednesday, Jun 02, 1915.

I have an great great uncle who was in the war and claimed he died in action, his wife claimed widow's pension and he then remarried without getting divorced. Fern -x-.

It was a Scarborough trawler lost nearby. May have received quite a bit of coverage in the local press. Might be worth pursuing that with the local library? Denis.

Not a lot of help really, but just some background for you. Condor was sunk by a mine 30 miles NE of Scarborough. Nine lives lost, including the skipper. Denis.

My thoughts exactly - BUT - having said that ...surely somewhere in all the War notes, someone would have noted that this particular chap had returned home safe and sound ???? the MoD are quite good at keeping records upto date - or thats what I always assumed ! I am totally intrigued by this and now wish that I wasn't leaving today ! I WILL be watching !! Elaine ;-) ** Trixie, have just seen your last reply** There must be a simple explanation for all this. His occupation MAY lead you to extra info .....

Thanks for the replies. I have searched the indexes over and over and can't find any other possabilities. Both Robert and Father were Fish Curers on the cert. I have spoken to Eliza's daughter and she insists that Eliza married Samuel Alan Cammish who happens to be Robert D's brother. I have searched all poss years for Samuel Alan Cammish to have married but not one marriage for him. Trixie

My niece was telling me of a relative who was informed that her husband was killed in the war. Imagine her shock when he returned home a few months later. I believe he was taken prisoner, escaped and it took months for him to get home. Heather

Trixie I can only deduce that there were two Robert Cammishes with father's name the same. Perhaps both the one that died in 1915 and the one that married your great aunt are related in some way. Can you try looking for the births of both? nell

Unknown Report 26 Mar 2006 11:50

I personally would be straight onto the CWGC site and explain the situ ......maybe he WAS missing in action presumed dead ? ..and later re appeared as a prisoner of war or something similar ? Maybe he is just a completely different person .... and the two fathers were actually cousins ? who had boys in the same year ? ...I'm sure you could find out if this were possible from the birth indexes. This is a really intriguing situation - I will certainly keep an eye on the boards to see the outcome ! Good LUCK ! Elaine ;-) What are the OCCUPATIONS on the marriage certificate for BOTH Groom and his Father ?

Some of you may remember in Jan I found a marriage for my Gran's sister. Holmes Eliza M Cammish Yarmouth.4b 9 Marriage 3 1919 Cammish Robert D Holmes Yarmouth.4b 9 Marriage 3 1919 The only Robert D Cammish found was Robert Duncanson Cammish but it couldn't be him as on the war graves site is: Name: CAMMISH, ROBERT DUNCANSON Initials: R D Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Deck Hand Regiment: Mercantile Marine Unit Text: Steam Trawler 'Condor' (Scarborough) Age: 20 Date of Death: 29/05/1915 Additional information: Son of Robert Duncanson Cammish and Mary Jane Cammish, of 30, Sandside, Scarborough. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL Well I now have the marriage cert (marriage 2nd July 1919) that confirms him as Robert Duncanson Cammish aged 24 with Father Robert Duncanson Cammish. I keep looking at the information and still don't know what to do about it. Any ideas!!! Trixie
