I understand what you are saying, but I have frequently found on censuses the name I am looking for being spelt in a huge variety of ways - for instance Adderley became Hadley; Jenkins became 'Tin kin'; and many many more examples. The individual would tell the enumerator their name, and the enumerator would write down what he thought he heard, spelling it how he felt appropriate. I can easily see that Horsley may become Hawley and vice versa. We are at the mercy of the intellect and education, as well as the common sense of the enumerators! Maybe someone will find a closer match for you but I am afraid I cannot. Liz
