Happy New Year to you all before start! i just wondered if anyone can do a census look up for a William Bennett married to Agnes i dont know the exact dates of birth for these but they will probably be around 1775 +-10 years. I know of some children Richard 1805 Strood, Kent, Grace 1807 and Amelia 1809. They would probably be born around the Strood area too, unfortinatly i dont know where William and Agnes were born but it will probably be in the Medway Towns, Kent, i hope this is enough information for someone to be able to help me! Regards Paul Bennett

Paul, I just had a quick look at Strood & it appears your Richard was already married by 1841. High Street, Strood. Richard Bennett 40 Fruiterer Mahala 30 Grace 10 Richard 8 Sarah 6 Elizabeth 10 months (census date was 6/7 June) all born in county dont forget ages of adults are supposedly rounded down to nearest 5 - take this with a pinch of salt! Place of birth & relationships are not given. Interesting he has named his eldest daughter after his sister (do you know Mahala's mother's name?) There is a grocer living next door (William Jarrett), might be worth a look at trade directories. No sign of William/Agnes, certainly not nearby. Unfortunately the disc I have is not indexed so it means trawling through every page. Will try again tomorrow if I have some free time.

thanx alot Vicky -the-Viking, so in the 1841 census Richard and Mahala are saying they are married, but the marriage record says they married in 1842 in North Aylesford. Unfortinatly i don't know Mahala's parents but on Ancestry it states Richards bennett married Mahala Barton, i dont yet know if they were married before as i think this semms like quite a late age to be married as they would be around 40? what do you think. Regards Paul Bennett

Hi Paul Well the 1841 doesn't give relationships but it certainly looks like they were living as man & wife! Given the age of the children its possible Mahala is his second wife, if you have found a marriage in 1842. But they may also have been together since 1830! I'd get Elizabeth's birth certificate & see who's down as mum. If its Mahala you'll get her maiden name. If not, you have a very tight date to look for the first wife's death. As an afterthought, I'd get the marriage cert too. If he is a bachelor then the kids could be hers from a previous marriage. If he is a widower then the older children are probably his - you aren't going to get official birth certs for them prior to 1837.

Paul Report 2 Jan 2006 13:26

ok then! i have found the baptism records for Richard, Sarah and Elizabeth and it states Mahala as the mother. Unfortinatly i do not know how to view parish records for North Aylesford i thought that if i could view this then i will find out mahala's father? i found the childrens baptism on medway/cityark but i haven'y found the baptism for Grace so is Mahala her mother? regards Paul

Paul Report 2 Jan 2006 13:40

do you think you will be able to find William and Agnes daughters Grace and Amilia on the 1841 or 1851 census i dont know there married name tho im afraid. maybe Agnes or William could be staying with them or maybe even Mahala's parents!

Vicky

Vicky Report 2 Jan 2006 14:10

Paul, it is next to impossible to find married daughters unless you know their married name. I'll carry on looking for William/Agnes but haven't found them yet. As for baptisms: even PR can be unreliable especially if the children were older when they were baptised. If you have the chance to get official certs I'd do so, it may save you going off down the wrong avenue. One of mine had 3 kids done at once, in London. Named same parents for all 3. Turned out the eldest had a different mother. I was really lucky with this as he was born in Nov 1837 so I did have a real cert to check. Without this mother's name I would never have found an older child born in a completely different county, which told me where the father was from. As for Grace, probably just means she was baptised in another parish, doesn't necessarily mean she has different parents. You can't do everything from your armchair you know! IGI coverage for Kent is very patchy, most of mine (bap & marriages) aren't on the IGI but I have found them in the Parish Records. Bit of a slog, but then that's what people did BC [Before Computers]

Hi Paul Sorry have drawn a blank looking for William & Agnes; don't appear to be in Strood in 1841. Perhaps someone will have better luck when a fully indexed version is available on Ancestry! Nor are they in the North Aylesford workhouse. The only Bennetts I found are Wiiliam age 25, ag lab, with Mary age 25 & Elizabeth age 3 Cage Lane Strood Harriett Bennett age 14 working as a servant, High St Thomas Bennett age 15 also living High St, no occup given, but no-one else in the household is called Bennett. Only Barton is Martha age 75, living on her own, High Hill, Strood. Not born in county. May be Mahala's mum???
