Laura This is from Nottinghamshire Baptisms 1533-1900 from Notts FHS. Dist D of B Child Father Mother Name SOU 22/01/1798 George William Mary BIRD SOU 31/01/1748 Mary John Martha YATES SOU 26/11/1745 Mary William Eliz YATES SOU 05/11/1752 Mary Richard Frances YATES As you can see William Bird is no problem but with Mary Yates you have a possible choice of three. laura - I make use of my local LDS library and they get me everything you can imagine. Go onto familysearch site and go into family library section and search the catalogue. Type which parish you want in the place box and up will pop everything they have - church/parish records, censuses, poor law details - which are wonderful for really charting the lives of people etc etc. The notes for each will give you the breakdown of years covered etc. You can find on the site the list of LDS libraries all over the world as well in virtually every place in UK to see which is nearest. You go there to order - normally £3.75ish for a complete microfilm which would cover a parish 1600-virtually present day. It takes about 4 weeks to arrive from Salt Lake city and you have access to it for at least 90 days and you just book yourself in to slowly go through it. Alternatively I will be at the Society of Genealogists in June and on their site if you just scroll down slightly on their home page and click on parish holdings you can find out what they have - if you spot something let me know and I will have a quick look for you. jan

Laura Looked in the Notts marriages and found that you are correct with your information on Richard Milward, reference as follows From Hockerton Marriage records. Rd Milward, husbandman, & Mary Yates, p Southwell Lic 11 Sep 1770. Looks like Richard was from Hockerton and Mary wa from Southwell. As they were married by licence you may be able to find the licence and get the information you need. I would suggest you contact the Nottinghamshire Family History Society with the information you have and see what they say. Sorry no parents given. Cheers Victor

Laura Having just looked in the IGI for Mary I can see your problem, three possible Mary's all born in Southwell, and all around the correct timespan. Best of luck. Victor

Laura Will be going to the Nottingham archives next week to do a look up for someone else. Do you want me to look at anything for you? Jenny

Laura Report 23 Apr 2005 13:26

Hi thanks Jenny, thats really kind of you x Not sure what info you need or what kind of years it covers, but the main one I'm struggling with is John Stapleton 1883 Kimberley, Notts, his father was also John Stapleton from the same area 1850. The mother Mary.... from Wakefield 1855. There are so many birth certificates for this name it would cost a fortune! I'd like to find his mothers maiden name if possible? Thanks again Jenny, Laura x

Hi Laura No problem! Let's see if I've got this right. According to Ancestry John Stapleton could be: John Dec 1883 Basford John Henry Dec 1883 Basford John Sheldon Dec 1883 Basford The parish records won't give me the mother's maiden name, but I should be able to tell which one of these three has parents called John and Mary and then you will be able to send for the certificate to find out the maiden name. That is as long as he was baptised!!! Is that right? Do you want be to look for the baptism of the elder John as well? Jenny

Laura

Laura Report 23 Apr 2005 18:10

Thats right Jenny, The older John was also Kimberley Notts 1850, from possible census information, his father was also John, mother Zillah. Thanks
