Zoe, I had to laugh, just as you sent that I got the image from the lovely Janet- and your right it looks like they slung the bags out of one door and in the other!! Well according to old maps! LOL Many thanks to you all- now I'll go and certify (?) this lot - one giant leap back for me. Thanks again, you've all been brilliant. |

They certainly didn't move far then as Wharfdale Road runs between York Way and the Caledonian Road, near King's Cross Station. |

address in 1891 is Muriel Street. Thi sis still there and just off the Caledonian Road. Risinghill Street is a few streets away south east of Muriel Street so although the two census have them in different areas they could probably have thrown their belongings form the old house to teh new one zoe |

Thanks Judith, I seem to have got a lot lately from that genuki! A good site I am totally lost and confused when it comes to London and districts! Especially as mine seem to flit back to Newcastle/Lancs and then Ireland!! |

Mike, This website could be useful to you -http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/churchdb/search.html If you type in a place name it gives names of nearest churches and distances to them, so you could find distance, for example, from Islington to Clerkenwell parish church. The London/Middlesex confusion arises because, apart from the square mile of the City of London, most of what we now call London was originally in Middlesex (apart from some parishes south of the Thames which were Surrey or Kent) So Clerkenwell and Islington both appear as part of the county of Middlesex in earlier censuses. From the 1891 census they become part of the County of London. Good hunting Judith |

Janet, If not too much trouble could you send again as I didn't get them - for some reason it went to msn just now as I wrote direct to you? If you can't it's ok - I have enough info to last me a month now! Thanks to all of you. Mike |

Dancer, Thanks very much. Joseph is my main interest as he's my ggdad- I'm not familiar at all with the London districts - could I ask if you know where I can see the distance from Islington to Clerkenwell in those days? A website I can go to? Thanks again for your help - appreciated more than you know! |

Wow Janet, Thank you, William is an extra I had no idea of. From the decoder Chrissie gave me 1901 I have the one I'm looking for Joseph Chambers... and these seem to tie in Thank you so much. Would it be very rude of me to ask on another thread for a full 1901? Please tell me if it is, as I'm a bit worried about asking? |
