Thanks Jools, Sorry I didn't get straight back to you but couldn't get on computer for work/hubby. I suppose I have to let him have a go sometimes! I will note all your info and investigate. However the son (my grtgrandfather)is Thomas so the family from Clifton don't look promising. It is Thomas who I am most interested in at the moment. I thought being about 9/10 and knowing the parents names he should be easy to find on 1871 census but this obviously isn't the case. Would never have thought to look at 'Doctor' though - amazing. I did try and google Appletown/Appleton and saw that there were a few possibilities in Yorks area. Helps alot doesn't it! If I have any joy with your info I will let you know on this thread. Thanks again Stella

There IS a William on the 1871 which could be him - mistranscribed as DOCTER !!!!!!!!! It does however put a fly in the ointment as far as the wife being Hannah. I've checked the image and it is Proctor. Zoe - thank you for your time and efforts on my behalf. Might do some googling about Appleton and see if I can come up with anything useful. Will also get Thomas's birth cert and hopefully it might give a more detailed address. Can't be too dispondant as only got his papers today - and suppose succeses wouldn't mean so much if they came easy! Good luck in your own searches Stella

Ok, the only ones not in a house in 1881 is... Thomas Proctor abt 1861 Pateley, Yorkshire, England Unknown vessels Nottingham (pvte) Also, bear in mind, he may have lied about his age to sign up. This gives two possibles in 1871.. Thomas Procter 8 Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England Son Shipley Yorkshire Thos Procter 9 Beverley, Yorkshire, England Son Bewerley Yorkshire The 2nd is the first one I gave you, and the first is this.. Mirian(??) Procter 32 Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England Head Shipley Yorkshire Elizabeth Procter 29 Ivybridge, Devon, England Wife Shipley Yorkshire Frank Procter 6 Shipley, Yorkshire, England Son Shipley Yorkshire Thomas Procter 8 Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England Son Shipley Yorkshire

Tracey - I only have Thomas's army papers which is where I am getting my info from. Therefore as yet I don't have his birth cert nor any idea of siblings. Otherwise the info I have is from his later life. He joined up in July 1880 so would be on 1881 census as in barracks or whatever. Don't know about his parents though. They should be on 1881 census and from the info I have I would expect them to be in Appleton as thats where his father was shown as living on next of kin details. I would have expected the family to show up on Yorks census somewhere but I don't know the area at all to be of any help. I will be getting his birth cert when I can narrow it down which may give a more definate address to follow up. Thanks for your interest and good luck in your own searches. Stella

Just a thought - do you have him in 1881? When was he in the army?

Stella

Stella Report 30 Mar 2005 16:23

Just a thought incase they moved out of the area in 1871 which would be just my luck - are William and Hannah Proctor on 1861 census for area? Of course can only guess at their ages being about 20 - 30 at that time and depending exactly when Thomas born - he could be on there at a month or two old. Grabbing at straws but you never know! Hopefully Stella

Thanks anyway Zoe. His army records give his age as 19years and 3months as at July 1880 so think have got my maths right. Also his father is given as next of kin and shows his address as Appletown Yorks. Don't know the area at all so could be just a village. Also could the familly be shown as Procter rather than Proctor? Will have to try getting his birth cert using parents names as reference and work from there first. I thought they would be relatively easy to find on census. Thanks again for your efforts. Stella

Stella

Stella Report 30 Mar 2005 15:53

Thanks for your quick reply Tracey but not hopeful! Definately William and Hannah as parents. Of course I will bear in mind their surname could be spelt Procter - just adds to the confusion doesn't it. Thanks again Stella

Hi, Please could someone help me by finding the entry for my great grandfather on 1871 census? Thomas Henry Proctor - age 9 or 10 Father - William Proctor Mother - Hannah Proctor Siblings - ? His army papers show him as born in 'Appletown' near York, which I think might actually be Appleton. I know his father was still in Appleton when Thomas joined the army so assume that's where they were on 1871 census, but I don't have a street name unfortunately. Thank you in anticipation!
