Valerie A lot of the information on LDS has been submitted by other researchers and can't be guaranteed to be accurate. Some of the information is from transcripts of original church baptism/marriage records so you can be fairly sure that those entries are ok. It's best to check any information you find on LDS against the original registers just to clarify the information before acting on it Lou |

I suspect you are looking at an Ancestry file that has been submitted by a member of the LDS church. It will say "submitted by" somewhere on it. Dont take any of it for certain without checking the original records yourself. Some of these are a work of fiction. Margaret |

Margaret I like the way you refer to some of the records as works of fiction! I remember reading a thread a while back about LDS and someone was saying how she'd found all this information on LDS and only started to get suspicious about its accuracy when she realised one woman had had 54 children! Lou Yep, remember that. Dont forget that when the IGI was started it was for the use of the LDS church, not general use. Margaret |

Valerie It is a pedigree resource file submitted by someone in Utah. Must be an LDS member I'd take it with a very large pinch of salt and check it all out properly for yourself This is what it says about pedigree files About FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File: The Pedigree Resource File is a new lineage linked database of records available on compact disc containing family history records submitted by individuals through FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service. Family information is organized in family groups and pedigrees and includes submitted notes and sources. Many charts and reports can be printed from this data. Each disc contains about 1.1 million names. With the publication of every five discs, a master index for those discs will be published and packaged with that set of discs. With the publication of every 25 discs, a master index for those discs will also be published and packaged with that volume of discs. Discs may be purchased as sets or volumes. |

In case it is of any help, there is a Benjamin Dalton on the 1871 census: Name Age in 1871 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island Benjamin Dalton 27 Lambeth Head Croydon Surrey Amelia Smith 47 Dartford, Kent, England Servant Croydon Surrey. By the way, some entries on the Mormons website are entirely accurate, some are not so! Joy |

Joy I think we are trying to advise Valerie that entries submitted by a member of the LDS church should not be taken at face value and should always be checked, as should all transcriptions. We are not saying that its all incorrect, far from it. Margaret |

Hi Valerie. I wanted to make corrections to my own gedcom files I submitted to LDS. They told me once submitted, it will not be deleted or changed. I would need to submit a whole new gedcom file which would be added to their data base. I guess that is why you'll see the same ancestor name, especially under Pedigree Resource file, listed numerous times with mostly the same information but having a few changes. It takes approx 3 months for them to add the gedcom. By then, I could have new information. They suggested to reduced duplication, I should only submit names of people whose data I knew to be accurate. Yeah, now they tell me. |

I agree with you, Margaret. By the way, I have a 4th cousin who is a Mormon and once when I found a definite mistake on the LDS site, I asked him if it could be corrected, but he said unfortunately no. Great shame that, I thought. Joy |

although i,ve found their 1881 census helpfull i have noticed some errors. many village placenames in the stoke on trent area are spelt completly wrong as are some personel names, also been in the usa, they have no understanding of local geography, or parish boundarys. my great grandparents for example produced no offspring! and east vale, where they lived was in a village called caverswall, not in the industrial pottery town of longton.( this is because of ancient parish boundarys before stoke existed as a city that were used by the 1881 census compilers) therefore one must allways check their infomation against other sources (a problem as my family came from staffs but i live on the east coast in lincs!) but to be fair they have give me some fruitfull leads. |

Thanks everyone for help. Joy the Benjamin Dalton you refer to was my grandads uncle though my grandad was gave up to someone else to look after, they did know of my grandad as they paid for his schooling and he became a baker and confection maker though don't know who mother was can't find her. I found the names and started checking hoping to find some more family for my mum |
