Just remembered something. Sometimes house numbers are changed, because houses have been built inbetween other houses, and the post office/authorities try and get it all sorted out. Therefore they could be at the same house, but in 1901 it had a different number. I looked up an address where my husband had lived in the 1881, and it was obviously the right house, because of the names of the neighbouring buildings, but the number was quite different. So perhaps you have the right family, at the right house, with a different number. Jan |

There doesn't appear to be a no. 4 George Street, it jumps straight from 2 to 12. At 14 George Street in 1901 lived a William Charles and family. Jan |

Vera, thank you very much. Is it possible to look up an address of 4 and 14 George Street, Portslade by Sea in Sussex and see who lived there? Hopefully it will read a Robinson family, the wife's name being Kate. |

Hi Vera, thanks for your help. The plot thickens indeed. The Ernest Robinson we found on the 1901 census matched the dates/place we have a note of but the incorrect house number. Its highly possible the info we have been given by a family member is incorrect. Ernest is a name that does appear in the family as a middle name so possibly the record we found is a red herring. However, the farthest back info we have is an Edward Robinson and he was found living in Feltham near Bognor and he had relatives in Chichester and Fishbourne. Edward had 2 brothers, Albert and Walter and they moved to Portslade c 1890 in search of work and worked in the gas works. Not sure who their parents were or when they were actually born. Edward married a Kate Ford and had 5 children. One of them, Alfred Edward Robinson is my husbands grandfather born in 1898. He married a Lilian Wodroffe. Is there an online access to the 1891 census at all? We got the 1901 online and we have the discs for the 1888 census. |

Hi Chris, not sure about Westmeston as the last letters definitely read "then". Ernest's wife was born in Southwick and the children listed were all born in Portslade. Thanks for your help though. Sometimes its a job trying to make out the enumerator's writing. :) |

Thanks for all your replies. West Worthing is a possibility, I can make out all the other towns on the rest of the page, ie Brighton, Southwick (where my husband was born), Goring etc. Happy New Year :) |

Hi Only thing I can think of is it being a badly transcribed or misheard version of West Worthing - not too far away from Portslade. S:> |

Could it be Westerham? There is a town by this name in the Kent area. |

Hi, I've got a print out of the 1901 Census for the parish of Portslade by Sea in Sussex. Think I have found a relative and it reads he was born in a place I can't 100% decipher. It reads something like "Westwethen" OR Westurethen". Has anyone heard of such a place? If so, would love to know where it is. Many thanks. |
