Best bet would be to buy Charles' birth cert, that will definitely tell you who his mother was and her maiden name. It's very possible that that 1873 marriage is the right one, but I wouldn't buy it until after you've bought the birth cert. Have no idea where Ellen Ball comes into it! On the 1871 I gave you, they are living next to a Ball family, but names are Thomas and Emma Ball.

Chloe and Esta You are both stars! I thought I was going to have real probs with this lot. Don't know her maiden name esta but that looks like a strong possibility - Rosannah is not a common name is it? Trying to trace further back so I can give family trees to rellies at christmas - one or two may like it, others (like my children) will have to be polite!

Esta Yes that is his family and I think you are right. I guess he remarried in Leicestershire though he obviously went to Kent. At least mother/father in law are the right sort of age here. Really stuck as how to trace back further on Rosannahs side though as I think she was the mother of direct ancestor ( charles Cherry) What a thing to be doing on a Sunday afternoon when I should be writing out christmas cards! I wa hoping she may be the mother, then I would know Rosannahs Maiden name, but i think it unlikely because of ages. Henry Cherry (Rosannahs husband ) was older than her and so I don't think it was his mother either. Also Cherry was Rosannahs married name. I am gettiing more muddled the more I think about it! Beat me to it Chloe! looking at 1881 image for Rosannah there is a ward family 2 doors down with a William Cherry as a boarder. Sure I have seen other Wards too. So I wonder what the relationship was - Can't get my head round it this afternoon! Alice

It could be 54 I'm useless at working it out, as you say a bit young to have a baby. Will try to trace her backwards and forwards to see if I can find her on another census. Alice

Could 36 be a mistranscription or are you looking at the image?

I have Rosannah Cherry aged 43 and head. She was married to Henry but is now widowed. Looking at previous images she was probably his second wife as he had children who were probably too old to be hers. Living in the same household is Ellen Ball aged 32 or 34 relationship 'mother' but to who? Can't be Rosannas mother as she is too old. Hope she might be a clue to get me further back. Family all born and living in Leicestershire. Can anyone help? Alice
