Hello I hope someone can help me please, I can't find a marriage certificate!!! I know that this won't be easy!!! Grans name was Lillian Watt born about 1891 She was a housekeeper in later life, so could be down as a servant. she married Frederick (Henry) George. born about 1881 he was supposed to be a soldier in WW1 but settled in Manchester as a draftsman. They could have married either in London or Manchester, although they lived in Manchester. They had a daughter Helen Elizabeth born in 1924 and a son Douglas born in 1927 If anyone can help me I'd be very grateful, although I have to admit I don't hold any hopes!!! The illusive wedding!!! regards to all looking on this thread Val |

Ancestry - Name: Watt, Lillian Ida M Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1890 District: Maldon (1837-1972) County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 508 Only one I can find. No marriages either. There are a couple of entries on http:/www.documentsonline(.)pro(.)gov(.)uk for Frederick Henry or Frederick H George for medals in WW1 - but this might be someone else and won't give any help with your search. Sorry couldn't help any further. Saz |

Just a few questions. Do you know if there were any more children. Have you looked on 1837.com if so what year were you looking for. Did you think to look before 1914 or during the war, many did marry knowing they were going to war and didn't have children until they returned. Irene |

Hi Saz Lillian was born and lived all her life, in Manchester, unfortunately your lady isn't her. Hi Irene No, I really don't have a clue if they married before the war, I have always understood they met after the war, he is supposed to have been with the Australian army, settling in England after!! (not sure how true this is!?) but I do know that they only had the 2 children. Thank you both Val |

Have you looked on 1837 online?? say 1918-1925? It shouldn't cost too much. Or you could look at the GRO index your local records office should have. Hope you find it. Chloe |

Hi Can't help with your query BUT noticed your comment re: Australian army - do you have any idea where your grandfather was based when he came to UK? My grandfather was Australian and came to UK during WW1, then got married and settled here - just wondering if they might have been in same regiment. My grandparents were married in 1918 in Blackpool, Lancs then settled in Wales where my gran was from ... I've lost track of him after c. 1930 as he "went back to australia! (no proof of this and suspect they simply separated). Good luck with your search. |

Sorry to go back to basics, but how do you know this? Do you have the birth cert of at least one of the children? How do you know when Lilian Watt and Frederick George were born? Do you have them on any census? Sorry--I just checked back--you have Lilian's birth cert? So you know her age in 1901 and her father's name. If you find her in 1901 you can be sure whether or not she WAS in Manchester. If you need a marriage cert after about 1905, it is not on free bmd. You will need to search the GRO index in a record office. Check your nearest one to find out where they hold the whole country on fiche. Wendy |

Hi Susan My Grandfather was in the Machine Gun Corps, I'm afraid that's all I know, I don't know where he was based in England. It could have been London or Manchester, I presume!! The return to Australia could be what also happened with my Grandfather, not heard of after 1927, led to believe dead, maybe Gran thought it best to say he died, rather than say he ran off!!!! Sadly we never knew him Val |

Valerie, The GRO index is held in London at the Family Record Centre BUT it can also be accessed at many local record offices. I don't know where you are, but it is worth ringing your local record office to see what they hold. If they do not hold GRO indexes for the whole country[ my local one does!] they should tell you who does. If you have trouble finding a record office---try the central library of your nearest town---they will help you. By the way have you checked the cwgc site for war deaths? They do include Australian deaths. Wendy |

Hi Not sure if this will be of any use, but here's the link to the Australian nominal role for all who signed up with Australian Army in Australia for WW1. Search is by surname and you'll need to remove brackets in this to get it to work!!! http(://)www(.)awm(.)gov(.)au(/)database(/)133(/)index(.)asp Gives details of date of enlisting and regiment assigned to - other info is either KIA (killed in action), RTA (returned to Australia) ...not sure what all other initials mean though think DOD is date of death. My grandfather was in 1st Battalion, enlisted in Sydney in August 1915 and discharged in December 1916. The National Archive of Australia are in the process of putting WW1 records online, which is proving v. frustrating as I'm trying to get hold of his records to see where/why discharged - his unit were at Gallipoli, so we're assuming discharge through injury BUT the archive won't release anything whilst this project is under way. If your grandfather's records are in the batch already uploaded, though, you may find them on the NAA site. S:> |
