Hi Robin Hood, your directory might be a bit late for these names but I am keeping my fingers crossed. My main research family in Sheffield is the BINNS family (originally from Rotherham!). My husband's branch came to Liverpool and I am trying to sort out the ones who stayed behind. I am looking for James BINNS a butcher, Herbert BINNS a house painter and his son George. I take notes of all information regarding all the Sheffield BINNS families and would be grateful for any you might send me! I am grateful for any advice or assistance. best regards Kathy

Hi Robin, Brilliant! I have a definite ID on one of them and I can tie several of them to families I have 'adopted'. Many, many thanks. Your help is much appreciated. Kathy

Hi Robin Would you be able to tell me from your index who lived at 96 Claypit Lane , Rawmarsh, Rotherham. I am trying to find a family by the name of "Roebuck" Or any chance you would you be able to do a search on a Marian Roebuck - domestic servant ??? Many thanks in anticipation Debbie

Robin

Robin Report 24 Jun 2004 22:42

Debbie Claypit Lane does not show in 1925. I cannot search for a servant as heads of household only are shown. You will need a Register of Electors to find her assuming she was over 21 Yrs. There is one Roebuck (John) at 46 Rawmarsh Hill.

Hi Robin Thanks very much any way. Could I be an absolute pain and ask when you are next checking your index if you could look the same address but spelt 96 Clay Pit Lane as in the past I have sometimes found that it has been spelt both ways. Many thanks for your help. Debbie

Robin

Robin Report 25 Jun 2004 13:44

Debbie It is Clay Pit Lane. Rawmarsh was then on the outskirts and therefore not full listed except for traders etc. 96 does not show. In the past I have e mailed Rotherham Archives at the main Library and received a response from the Archiavist. If you ask him nicely he may check for you although it will take quite a while.

Hi Marion Courts 3 and 5 are between 13 and 37 Boston Street, but the residents are not listed. There is only one Hensman listed and that is Mrs Harriett A Hensman, Beerhouse Keeper, 33 Botham Street.

Hello Robin, you've been very helpful to me. I'm leaving my family for now and starting to have a look at my husband's. Could you look for a Herbert and Florence Smith (!) in Hatherley Road, Rotherham. My father-in-law was born at no 88 in 1927, and both Florence & Herbert were resident there on marriage in 1913 (nos 53 & 58). Herbert is a Colliery Deputy. Thanks Helen

Helen Kellys Directory 1925 88 Hatherley Road. Hbt Chas Smith, Fried Fish Dlr. Whites Directory 1919-1920 43 Hatherley Road, Herbert Charles Smith, Colliery Deputy Looks as though he packed up the pit for fish and chips, which is exactly what my father did on Fitswilliam Road a few streets away from Hatherley Road!!!. Nb If you want a photo I will be there on Sunday.

Thanks Robin. On son Keith's birth certificate of 1927, Herbert is still shown as a Colliery Deputy - Fish must have been a side line. I would love a photo, if possible, thank you. Helen
