Hi, please could someone with the decoder look for a family that includes: Thomas Thorpe, born in Nottinghamshire, Mary Jane Thorpe, his wife born Notts Their children Samuel b1867/1887 Nottinghamshire, George and Frank. Cannot find ANY of them on 1881 or 1901 census, and somebody has looked on 1891 as well for me, but it was unsuccessful. I know that Samuel definitely existed, i've found his death on 1837online (age 31, 3/10/1918) and my auntie had this correct information, so i'm hoping that the rest she's given me is accurate! Thanks in advance! Nicola |

Thanks, that looks very likely, i don't think i've ever looked up any other counties but Nottinghamshire, but i suppose i should rule others out! Thanks Penny, Nicola |

Thanks Rick, Does that mean they will all be in one household?? i don't really understand the decoder thing! I've looked up practically every sam/samuel in Notts/Derbyshire to try and find him, but not been successful! Nicola |

Hi Nicola, I'm not that up with the decoder myself, but I grouped all of the names by page number, so this lot looks like one family. The Mary on the page is much younger than Thomas, so she's either his daughter (so maybe the mother had died) or perhaps a second wife. By the way, there is one marriage on Ancestry which might be of interest: Thomas Thorpe, Shardlow Notts, Sept 1884, vol 7b, page 658. There's a Mary Jane Slack on the same page (as well as one other female). Rick. |

Hmm ... as well as the five people that Rick names, my decoder includes a Phoebe 50 Mansfield and a Phoebe 14 Mansfield. |

Rick, that marriage sounds even more likely, as then that would make Samuel probably the eldest child. Thanks! I'll go and have another cruise around 1901 census to see if i can find them!! Please could you look for them on 1891 census for me? They SHOULD be in Nottinghamshire, but i'm not betting on it!! Thanks very much, Nicola |

Geoff, this is the family with the pheobe in it, i've been saving all the incorrect ones, so that i don't check them, and the Pheobe that you mentioned and the Froude from Rick are in the same family and rung a bell. Just had a thought, Mary Jane and Thomas were still alive in 1918, as on CWGC, they are listed as Sam's next of kin, and they are living in Pleasley Hill then. He was married with children the though. He married Florence Ada Reason, and had Florence Jessie and Alice Azubah (don't ask where THAT cones from- have no clue!)(A.A was my grandma) they were born 1912, and 1914 respectively. Nicola |

Hi Nicola, Just had to type Azubah into google !! Azubah Meaning: deserted This was the name of two biblical women... The wife of Caleb (1 Chr. 2:18, 19). The daughter of Shilhi, and mother of king Jehoshaphat (1 Kings 22:42). I don't have 1891 access, but loads of others on here do. Why not post a specific request for that - I'm sure someone will help. Rick. |

Thanks very much Robin and Rick! I wonder why the heck my great grandparents chose Azubah for a middle name for their child!?! Your help is greatly appreciated, Nicola |

Hi Nicola, One branch of my family passed the Zilpah (also biblical) down from generation to generation too. I guess the names didn't sound so outlandish then. Rick. |

Nicola, But Louise is quite a funny name for someone called Ian Price don't you think !! Mine's Jonathan (and my first name's Richard, but no one calls me that apart from my mum when she wants to wind me up). Fave family names: Jose Maria Penalber (male - spanish) Dinah Gold Willder (nearest we'll ever get to gold in the family) Zilpah Selina Truman Rick. |
