I agree with Vanda. This board is already 10 pages long and the people who are kind enough to offer lookups are getting lost again. Just one board for the offers of help so that we know who we might ask and this one for posting requests and replies? (does that make sense?) |

Nudge WE DEFINITELY NEED A BOARD PURELY FOR OFFERS OF LOOK-UPS - it's getting urgent, so much time is spent looking through other people's requests, interesting though they are. Vanda |

Reading all your questions and answers is interesting, this site is a good idea so don't lets run them down. The other message boards have a name search at the top so why not have a board for just searchs, mainly the census if those of us who have them don't mind looking. We could post which look up we are able to do say Hampshire 1851 census. Then anyone looking for ? could just search out Hampshire and pick which one they would to ask for help. I must admit I do like reading all the different messages. Irene |

Hi Andrea I think that is a good idea as long as the person doing the look up's does not mind getting a lot of e-mails, if they do not want the e-mails they can put on the offer put your request on the thread, and they will e-mail your reply. Valerie |

I have just messaged GC to ask them to re-word their heading on the Record Office Board so everyone knows what to do. Will let you know the answer. Thanks for the support so far! |

In answer to all the messages that have been posted so far:- My interpretation of the Records Office board is that people who are willing to do searches in cemetries or wherever, should put a thread on here saying where they are willing to look. I then think that THOSE WANTING LOOK UPS - should email that person direct - NOT post their request on this board. When there are look ups posted on this board, then the offers get lost - that is the problem here. As for those saying this is not well thought out (or such comments) - please give GC a chance. The fact that we have the board at all says that they are at least reading our comments and TRYING to act on what we are asking of them. If we all follow this idea, I think it would be more successful. I am not trying to say that I have come up with the "Perfect" solution - but we can at least give it a try. What do you think???? |

I have contacted GC to express my doubts about the way it is working and suggested that the format be as follows: Persons with access to materials (CD, book, Record Office, etc.) post a thread saying what they have available. Persons requiring information either post their request on that specific thread or else e-mail the person with the information direct. The current set-up is ill thought out and of limited utility. |

I think that sounds a GOOD idea! Wouldn't be as confusing if threads were itemised, so to speak. Margaret |

I thought this board was for people wanting look-up. this is the message above the tips board (If you are willing to look up information for other members or if you would like a fellow member to look up information please post a request on the Records Office Board). Chris |

I have been thinking about how to try and help this Records Office board work better as so far it is just getting swamped with look up requests and the offers of help are getting lost. I would like everyone's opinion on the following idea:- 1. If we use threads such as "Lancashire" "Staffordshire" etc - and then under these threads, enter where we would be willing to do searches in Cemeteries etc in Lancashire or Staffordshire - and then people know which thread they need to read for which area they would like searching. 2. If we find someone that would be willing to do a search for us - we send the request to their personal Email NOT post it on the thread - so the offers don't get lost amongst all the look up requests My idea is that this way, it should be quick and easy to find out if there is anyone willing to do a search for us in the area we are interested in and that the boards should stay reasonably clear so we can find what we want quickly and easily. If the look ups go direct to the person and they reply to the person wanting the request - everyone gets what they want. Short of someone making another website for this - do you think this would help solve the problem???? Opinions please. |
