Thankyou OZ Bird. Double checked with my relative and my Grandfather is recorded as Albert Clarke on his Baptism Cert. Grandfather could still have been born out of wedlock and kept his Mothers maiden name of Moreton. The other two brothers Frederick and George have the surname Moreton recorded on their Baptism Certs.

Regards Marion whose up very early today. 5.12am

I agree with Marion. Yes, it was usual for a widow to use her married name when remarrying but not ALWAYS.

Hope you find that marriage eventually, Lady.

Hello Andy,
Thanks for your input. I,m not so sure and here,s why... My G G Grandfather on my Mothers side married his second wife Ellen Carr in 1865 and she is down as Spinster. Not so as Ellen Carr was once married to a Thomas Dell so in fact the name Dell should have been stated but it wasn,t. On my Grandfathers Baptism Cert it clearly states his Father was George Clarke. Ok maybe Annie did not marry this Clarke fellow but I wont give up the searching as my other relation feels sure Annie was married to George Clarke.

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news but if William Payne married Annie Moreton then it is highly unlikely that she had been married to George Clarke - she would have been married as Annie Clarke.
Also the sons are all down as Moreton on the 1901 census - any legally Clarke would be shown as such. I can't see anybody pretending that children were illegitimate when they weren't.

Sophie this one is for you. The Emily you found I,m not sure about as I remember my Father taking me to visit Emily or Aunt Em as he called her when I was a little girl. The area is right though for Hackney being in London,s East End. Aunt Em passed away in her 70,s and the last time I saw her was when I was 21 years of age. Emily did marry and had three children. Perhaps the Emily you found could have been Aunty Em,s little sister who passed away aged 1 year?. Thankyou for your help.

I,m still over the moon with your find Oz Bird. My Grandfather was the youngest son born to Annie and his name was Albert born 1893 Hemel Hempsted. My Grandfather need not be ashamed any more thanks to you Oz Bird. My own Father told me that his Father was born out of Wedlock and for the life of me I cant understand why Annie who died in 1939 did not tell him the truth. Poor Granddad. Now I must try and find the marriage. Bless you Oz Bird.

I was a bit pleased with myself I must say. Why I didn't try one of the children before, I don't know.

It's certainly worth going back over your threads with a fresh mind, isn't it?

So are you descended from one of the Clarkes or from Frederick?

Ozi.

Clever girl. As you say Bingo. I say Top Of The House and take any prize you like from the Top Shelf.
I guess I had better change my surname to Clarke but I kind of like Morton. Big Clap for OZ Bird

Hello Sophie,
This is what I have and my other relation has the same info on his F/T. First and oldest son was Frederick William Moreton born 17/08/1883 Oxfordshire Workhouse. The birth was reg on the 03/09/1883 Headington. Next son born was George Moreton 08/04/1888 Hemel Hempsted. My Grandfather was the third son born in 1893 Hemel Hempsted. The first two sons Fathers names unknown and they did keep their Mothers maiden name. I keep thinking Sophie about what my own Father told me which was that my Grandfather was very ashamed of the fact he was born out of wedlock. My other relation also a Genes member informs me Annie must have married this George Clarke and then Divorced him before she married William Payne. I just dont know. Perhaps if Hannah like the name of Annie so much then maybe she is down on the 1891 Census as Annie? I think Sophie I shall call this Family Tree of mine...
The Tree Of Name Changers as both sides of my family were very good at doing this. Even my Fathers sister who I knew as Aunt June was really born Emily. Over 40 years and I thought she was Aunt June. Anyway thats just a little extra but of no concern to the above.

Thanks ladies. Yes to both of them and Annie was a named she used sometimes but not her real name. The 1891 Census must hold the key here to the mystery. Hannah or Annie had three sons Frederick the oldest born in the Oxforshire Workhouse followed by George then my Grandfather the youngest son. The mystery might also be the spelling of the surname Moreton as today as with me the surname is now Morton.

Hi everyone and thankyou for all your help. Oz Bird you have found Hannah for Abingdon Berkshire staying with Chas Trinder age 55. Here is the Marriage information...

William Payne
Place of marriage: Holy Trinity, Barking Road
Date of marriage: 6 NOV 1898

The Marriage Cert is being forwarded to me by a family member who is away for a few weeks longer. On my Grandfathers Birth Cert for 1893 Hemel Hempsted it states his Father was George Clarke. I was always led to believe that my Grandfather was born out of wedlock but my other family member does not think so. Hannah Louisa Payne died in 1939 as I have a little In Lovong Memory Card.

Thankyou Regards Marion

Hello I am hoping someone might be able to help me with a marriage lookup for my Great Grandmother, Her name was Hannah Louisa Moreton born 1857 Abingdon Berkshire. I am trying to connect her in marriage to a George Clarke possibly in the 1890,s?. I know later she married a William Payne as her second husband and the two had a daughter Emily born about 1900. Its the Clarke marriage information I am seeking.
Thanks guys and have a great day.
