Find Ancestors

Please can someone explain how the marriage records work ie if I find two names with the same area, volume and page numbers, is that confirmation they were married, and is there anywhere I can find them written together?
(Thomas Hobson and Mary Ellis - Newark vol 15 page 667)
Hope this dosen't sound daft, but I need to be sure.

The names are just listed in alphabetical order so Mary Ellis could have married either of the men listed. I hope this helps, If you have the age and area of birth for either Thomas or Mary you could look for them on the census following the marriage

I assume you have used freebmd. No you cannot be sure as there are usually two marriages to a page and so you may be matching a bride and groom from different weddings. It may be that the other names have not been transcribed yet; they seem to be done alphabetically.

The only way you can be sure is to get the certificate.

Sometimes there are two marriages to a page (4 names) and sometimes 4 marriages (8 names), so you can't be certain who married who.

However if the marriage was before 1901, then you can usually check the census for the male name and see what his wife's first name is which can sometimes help you decide which of the names on the marriage index married each other (however this doesn't help much if his wife's name is Elizabeth and there are 4 Elizabeths on the same page of mariages).

I'll try and explain my dilemma
I've had two hotmatches for Thomas Hobson, born abt 1816 in Luddington, with the correct children listed, but one has him married to Mary Yates and one to Mary Ellis
From 1851 onwards I have him with wife Mary, and I'm trying to find which Mary is the correct one.
As their first child was born in 1844 I worked backwards from then on the free bmd and found the one listed above - I have access to ancestry so is there another way to search apart from just by name - how can I look at the two marriages per page referred to above?

I would buy the birth certificate of whichever of their children is your ancestor.
That will show the mother's maiden name.

The only way you could see the marriages without actually buying the certificate would be to look at the parish records for the relevant church.....which could be one of many in that registration district.

Some counties have transcribed births, marriages and deaths for their area on sites online.

Check for your county.

You can't view birth certificates without buying them, unfortunately.

Sometimes if you follow a family forward through a census, you might find the wife's mother living with a family and unless she ( the mother) has remarried you might get the maiden name of Mary there.

Crossed wires here - sorry - I mean how did you get all 4 of the vol 15 page 667 together because I just found them by trial and error from a long list of their respective surnames

scroll down to the red boxes and click on SEARCH.
Choose Marriages then put in Thomas' name and surname.
As you had already found a reference you can put that in.

Click on the page number and you will be shown a list of the other people recorded on the same page.

NB ...This refers to the same page of the GRO lists and the names could be for marriages anywhere in that particular registration area.

Freebmd is a great help but it is a good idea to check the references on Ancestry too.

Freebmd is not complete yet but has quite alot to offer up to about 1920 ish.

BUT freebmd is more complete than ancestry for the 1837 onwards ...... because ancestry takes its information from freebmd, so is always a few weeks (maybe months) behind.


I think it is preferable to go right to the source, ie freebmd.


ancestry does carry the 1983 to 2005/6 bmds which freebmd does not yet show, and ancestry has the Complete Index which you have to search quarter by quarter, but it is the only access we have until the volunteers finish inputting on freebmd.


Incidentally, freebmd seems to be upto as alte as 1936 for some places, so it is moving ahead by leaps and bounds!

Hello Gwynth, can you please do a look up for me. I have George Roberts (I'm guessing he was born about 1860) married to Bridget Walsh or Welsh probably in the UK as I cant find their marriage in NSW BDM. They had a daughter Ruby Agnes Roberts c1886 in Sydney Australia. I would like to know where George and Bridget were born and if they had any other children.

Since last night when I learned to search the marriage index properley I've filled in 2 more blanks in my tree where I had Mothers first name only
It really pays off to ask what may seem like a silly question!!
