Thanks you all very much for your efforts.
Could I please ask one last favour?
Would someone mind having a look for Joseph and Mary on the 1901.
Mary was a year younger than Joseph and was born in Southwark.
Many thanks.

Just found another coincidence with the 1891. Four doors up is a family of Kellys. No Mary with them though.

Using search on NA for Joseph Brown born 1840-1850 occupation of house decorator gives two results

Joseph Brown 61 London Peckham London Hackney House Decorator

Joseph W Brown 52 London Kingsland London Lambeth House Decorator

Have you found any on 1881 with the same occupation?

Deb,
Yes, I suppose a House Decorator would be classed as a Labouring occupation.

Yes, he does Kim. I wonder if he went to work for them. Hang on, I'll have a look at his father's occ.

Deb:)

His father is a house decorator...................is that a labouring occupation?

GlitterBaby Report 23 Oct 2007 12:21

National Archives give 271 possibles for Joseph Brown b1875 +/- 2 but none with occupation of french polisher.

He could have been in the Boer War.

No middles names on marriage registration so that is no help.

Hi Angela,
The father's occupation was Builders' Labourer.
The witnesses were E. Campion and Margaret Shanley.

I was looking at this Joseph and although it says his occupation was a printer at the time, I noticed something spooky. His immediate next-door-neighbours are all french polishers.

Hi All,
I'm going round in circles trying to find my GG Grandfather in any census.
All I know of him is that he married in 1895 in St Olaves Southwark to Mary Kelly.
From the marriage certificate, I know that he was a French Polisher, he was 20 years old and his father was also named Joseph.
I have no idea where he was born.
Do you think I stand much chance of ever finding him in a census?
Any help/advice eagerly awaited.
Thank you.
