I can't find her. There's an Emma Abraham living as a lodger with a Harris family in Kings Norton but she's aged 20, an infant school mistress.

Janet,

Unfortunately, it doesn't list the relationship and it was the 1871 census.

There's another child on the 71 census named Horace Powell, age 2. On the 1881 census, he's with Emma Harris, 62, widow, her daughter Elizabeth Powell, 38 widow and sons M. Powell, 15 and Horace H., 12.

OOPS! Sorry I put the wrong census. (Am I the only one whose brain starts to spin with all these names and dates?)
Joan - yes. this is the record. The Horace Powell there is my great-grandfather, and grandson to
Emma Harris. This is why I wondered if Amy were a grandchild also.
I need to see if they had a daughter who married a Mr. Hand! I'll also check out the marriage record.
Thanks for the response.

Hi Margaret - you responded while I was typing I think! Yes, this is the same family - see my response above. Amy has disappeared hasn't she?
Thanks for the reply.

The 1871 census states that Emily Harris is unmarried.

Do you have a Sarah Ann Harris in the family, Jan? There's one who married Alfred Hand in 1867, Kings Norton.

Joan

Joan Report 3 Jan 2008 19:22

It appears that David Harris may have been married before because the 1861 census states that Caroline and Joseph are his children.

On the FamilySearch website, it states that David Harris' wife was Leah.

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for your efforts - especially Joan! I need a bit of time to look at all this, but once I have I am sure it will help me a lot. Will post again when I've got it sorted!
Thanks again.

Joan -and everyone else! - are you still there?!
Still struggling.
I really feel that Emma was the 2nd wife. If you would be kind enough to check the 1861 census, there is a big discepancy between the ages of his children. Emma is his wife according to this.
I can't find a Leah, Joan - where did you see this?
Wish me luck!
Jan
