I was updating my family tree to include my Grandmother Maria Pickering's first marriage to Arthur Gerrard, my lineage is with her second marriage. I was just trying to find out Arthur's parents & siblings.

I apologise I didnt realise it would escalate to this.

I found a death of a Hannah Jane Gerrard in 1893 aged 31 years which would make the 1881 census details correct.

I think I had better have a cup of tea to help clear the head.

1861 son of John and Lydia in Cheddleton b 1856 Dilhorne

1871 lost him

1881 visitor Congleton (born Cheadle 1869?) ?? - I'm getting badly lost now.. oh yes, the other is b 1856 Longton, Staffs, seen 1881 in Barnstaple (the one mentioned above)

1891 not seen

1901 b Blyth Bridge Staffs 1856, living in Torrington in Devon

Francis Joseph Gerrard marries in Stoke in 1878 and also in Devon in 1896. He is shown aged 25 as a retired grocer, single, lodger, in 1881

Have you seen the marriage certificate details? There are two possible Francis Gerrards for that marriage and both stay resoluately single on the census! Clearly I am missing something on this one...

Maybe the enumerator didn't believe she had been married? He has listed them as:
Ann, Wid, Head;
Hannah, dau, single;
amd the two grandchildren,
all as having Ann's surname.

Thank you everyone for your help and input. I am obviously going to have to back track and figure out why the change in name.

Hannah J was with her mother in 1881 with the two grandchildren Annie F & Arthur Gerrard. She was listed as born in Leek and married.

I think I found her marriage in 1878 to a Francis J Gerrard on Staffordshire BMD.

I just cannot understand why she reverted back to her maiden name in 1891, can you please confirm if she is still listed as married?

It is not so strange that Arthur is Arthur Gerrard in 1881
Then Arthur Johnson in 1891

My G grandfather's name is Matthew Bainbridge
in 1861 Census & 1881, 1891 1901

In 1871 he is Matthew Marshall as my ggg grandmother remaried and they assumed my G grandfather was of the same name (Marshall)

Nor me! I just thought that there might be a chance to find an Arthur in Leek no surname - and saw a grandson (actually Arthur Goldstraw, and wasted a little time working out whether Gerrard - Goldstraw is possible LOL) - luckily another grandson further down, and Johnson then (onyl then) rang a bell

staying with his grandmother, Ann Johnson. He was 2 months old.

His mother I think is Hannah J Gerrard born 1863c. Father not listed.
