I am helping a man in his 60's with his tree but am stuck. He has William Scott b. 1877 Walsall as his grandfather and Ruth as his grandmother. William married a Florence and in 1901 lived in Coventry with children Horace and Elsie. However, Ruth was born Hutchinson (in Leicester) and married a Jonathan Gandy in 1897 and had son Jonathan the same year. The story goes that Ruth's husband went off to South Africa to 'make money' for his family. It would appear he never came back !! On 1901 census young Jonathan is living with his Hutchinson grandparents and Ruth is living alone in Leicester - presumably to be able to work.

At some point Ruth must have met William Scott because I have tracked their marriage March Quarter 1913. I am given to understand that as well as the above Horace and Elsie there were two other children of William's - Jack and John. I do not know if 'Jack' was his proper name or a shortened version of something. I am therefore trying to track the births of John Scott and Jack Scott - sometime after the 1901 census - to establish if they are the children of William and his first wife Florence or the children of William and Ruth. The children would be born Coventry - before 1913 if they were William and his first wife's and after that time if they were William and Ruth's. I have tried and tried to find these births but as yet have not managed it. Could someone try for me please ? Thank you.

Yes Eloise - I take your point. My own grandfather was John but always called Jack and I did indeed question this man about this and he said that there WERE two more children and was was always called John and one always called Jack. I'm wondering if Jack was James of Joseph or something similar.

Sophie - thank you for that. I really don't know about second names. I am going to have to phone this gentleman in Scotland to see if he knows, but I doubt it very much - most of the info he has given me to work on fir his tree is rather vague. Thank you for trying

Covlass - Sharon? - you gem you. Where the heck did you find that? Arthur is one of the FOUR children William Scott had with his second wife Ruth (nee Hutchinson) former married name Gandy. Ruth married William Scott March 1913 and had son William Marcus before the above Arthur and two sons Leonard and Lionel after this. Really pleased with this, as I was going to have to search for these four lads. Still got the problem of John/Jack though.

Thank you everyone, you are being most kind.

Covlass - looks as if Alfred Frank must have died because he is not on the 1901 census with William, Florence, Horace and Elsie. That's one we didn't know about !!

Hi Margaret

I remember finding the 1901 census for you and looking for the marriage between a Florence N born Birmingham (as she is on the 1901) and a William T Scott, (out of curiousity) the only marriage I could come up with was this one.

William Nutter Scott
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Birmingham (1837-1924)
County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 328

Florence Nellie Wright on the same page.

Others on page according to FreeBMD are
Phoebeh Nargise Boyajian
Edward Hughes

There may be another marriage of a WilliamT Scott to a Florence N as I have not checked the actual images.

Just wondered if this cast any doubt on this William being the right person.

Gail.

It's okay it is probably a different person as this is a birth reference for

William Nutter Scott, 1870 Q4
District: Kings Norton
County: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire
Volume: 6c
Page: 420

William T does give his birth year as 1876ish.

Yes, it is the wrong marriage as Willliam Nutter Scott married the Pheobe N.

Just wondered if William T and Florence N did not marry would she have died under her maiden name.

Gail.

Hi
Wondering if it is possible that Florence N Scott 'lied' about year of birth in 1901 census as I have found the following death registration in Leicester in 1911 for a Florence N Scott. Would explain perhaps how William and Ruth met up.

Death in the September quarter of 1911 at the age of 28 in Leicester Volume 7a page 294 Would make her birth year c1883

I know this would have meant she married and had children very young but before 1926 girls could marry at the age of 12 and boys at the age of 14 with the consent of both sets of parents
Hope this helps let me know what you think

Margaret

Margaret Report 16 Jan 2008 14:51

Hi Gail - cannot say for certain that they did marry, but the family on 1901 is definitely the right family. The man concerned tells me that his 'Scott' grandfather's first wife was Florence and was able to give me the names of Horace and Elsie as two of their children. It is their elusive third child Jack/John that is the mystery. I have just emailed him actually because it suddenly occured to me that this John/Jack could quite easily be the son of William's second wife Ruth. Her married name was Gandy and she had a son JONATHAN !! As I pointed out to him, we have no way now of proving or disproving it until 1911 census is released in 2012. If that shows a Jack/John/Jonathan aged 14, then that is the answer !! What a mystery this particular part of this family has been. Thank you for all your help.

Diane - that is certainly something worth thinking about. Will have to chew that over but have made a note anyway.

Hi Margaret
Had a look at all deaths for Florence Scott 1901 to 1913 the majority were for babies or young children but have found 2 other possibles
Unable to find any other Florence N's of an appropriate age but found these two without any 2nd initial
March quarter of 1904 at the age of 20 in Aston Volume 6d page 311

December quarter of 1905 at the age of 30 in Worcester Volume 6c page 147
Don't know if these are any use
