Hi everyone
I'm researching my ggg grandfather. His name was Zalig Hart. He was born in Whitechapel in 1813 or Whitechapel 1818. Family records have his name as Zalig though Talig has also been used in census. If any one is able to find his birth certificate, I would be so grateful.
Thank you

He won't have a birth certificate as there weren't any certificates before July 1837 when registration began.

You will need to look at parish records for the place he was born to see if you can find a baptism for him.

You could do this at the county records office for the area, or you could see if you can find a baptism for him on the IGI on the Mormon site - www.familysearch.org

If you don't live in the area, you can order filmed copies of parish records from any LDS Family History Centre for a few pounds, (addresses on www.familysearch.org).

After having a google I wonder if Zalig is Jewish in which case you would need to find the synagogue records.

For instance (and I don't know if this is your Zalig).

There is this site which mentions a Zalig Hart,

http://www.jeffreymaynard.com/jcto1869.htm

London Jewish Chronicle Index to 1869

5-Feb-1869 M
On 3rd February at the Great Synagogue, Michael Joseph.............................................................................. to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Zalig Hart of 101 Middlesex St.

Other mentions on that site.

Thank you both.
New to this and didn't realise the recrods only went from 1837.
Recently found out he was Jewish. There any way of finding his certificate if I don't live over in the UK?
Cheers

Thank you Sylvia!
I didn't see your post before sending my reply. They are related, Zalig in that census was Zalig's son. Thank you for the look up though!

Is this any use to you?

HART. Zalig.
In 1875 under the rites of Great Synagogue of London Benjamin Hart
[1850-1] married Matilda Solomon. His father was Zalig and according to
the wedding certificate his mother was Hannah. Zalig is believed to have
had an earlier marriage.
Benjamin was the 4th child I believe [but no real proof other than say so].
Both Zalig and Benjamin were fishmongers and were born in Aldgate and
Whitechapel.
Benjamin takes his family of Matilda and four children to Australia in
1883 and I have a sizable history on Benjamin's history.
I'm hoping there are those that can tell me more about Zaligs life,
ancestors, and family.

My best wishes to you and yours, Ray Hart

Subject: [HART-L] HART HUNTER

I have a some time been hunting HART family of Zalig HART. This what I have
....
Benjamin Hart married Matilda Soloman in the Great Synagogue of London 1875
His parents Zalig and Hannah, Her parent Colman Soloman
Their trades Fishmonger and Furniture Sales
Migration Sydney Australia 1883. Later to New Zealand.
Harold Hector Bernard Hart [UK ? ].......... Wellington New Zealand
Charles Henry Hart [ b UK 1878 ]............ Texas, USA
Marion Pauline Williams [ b UK 1876 ] ....... Bexley, Sydney Australia
Celestine Leonora Williams [ b ? ........ " " "
Alexander Joseph Hart [ b UK 1880 ]......... South Africa.
Gershon Leonpold Hart [ b AUST. 1883 ]......... Perth, Western Australia.
Jeanetta Julia Stockbridge [ b AUST.1886 ] .... Bexley, Sydney.
Avice Anetta Blackmore [ b AUST. 1888 ]......... Newcastle, NSW Australia.
John Robert Victor Hart [ b AUST.1890 ]........ Napier, New Zealand
Norman Cyril Alphonso Hart [ b AUST. 1900 ]..... Invercargill, New Zealand.

,,,,,,,,,

Now Benjamin's father was Zalig Hart. That comes from a copy of Benjamin's
and Matilda's marriage site. We believe that the 1881 British census has a
mis-spelling for Zalig. They have called him and a 16 year old son "Telig".

It appears that Zalig [ b1818 ] [ whose middle name was Solomon ] was the
son of Moses Hart who passed away in 1844. Moses is believed to have been
married to Elizabeth.

Zalig Solomon HART had 7 children whose names and dates of birth were ...
Moses HART [ b1846 Middlesex, St.England ]
Betsy HART [ b1847 Middlesex, St.England ]
Daniel HART [ b1850 Whitechapel,Middlesex St.England ]
Benjamin HART [ b1851 "London" ]
Rosetta HART [ b1853 Middlesex St. England ]
Zuseman HART [ b1855 ]
Lipman HART [ b1856 Middlesex St. ]

''''''''''

Daniel, mentioned above had 4 children .....
Mary HART [ b c1870 Whitechapel, Middlesex, England.
Eliza HART [ b c1875 Whitechapel, London, England.
Zalig HART [ b c1876 Whitechapel, London, England.
Marks [Morris ]HART [ b c1879 Whitechapel, London, England.

Benjamin, mentioned above was to become my Great Grandfather.

If any of the above is a help to that's great. If you have anything you
think would be of value to me I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Hey, Lew & Couldbe. Guess what.

I did that googling a few days ago ...

And that might be how we recently found out he was Jewish ...

Jess Report 19 Jan 2008 03:15

Hi Kathryn
I got in touch with Ray a few months back and he told me about Zalig and the Jewish link, though thank you for the look up you did for me in the other thread and also telling me about the other people looking for Zalig.
This started as a look up request for a birth certificate but I didn't realise they were only recorded from 1830s onwards, so it has become slightly, another census type thread without meaning it to.

Thanks every one for your help.
